Lesson Interpret Manuals

What I Need to Know

Objectives:

1. Interpret Manuals
2. Identify different Types of equipment
3. Perform some procedures in repairing the equipment,
What’s New

Plumbing works requires some tools and equipment to be able to work easily
and efficient. Using manuals is very important to guide you in using, repairs or do
maintenance your tools and equipment. Most manuals are self-explanatory and
easy to follow. Here are some tips on getting more out of yours.

1. Make sure you have the right manual in front of you. This may seem
obvious, and often it is, but since there are many similar pieces of equipment,
and information may vary from one piece to another, check your manual to be
sure you are using the right one.

2. Look for specific sections detailing the type of service or repair you are
going to perform. Here are some you may find in common equipment:
 Lubrication. This section will describe the lubricating locations on the
machine, the types of lubricants to use, and the capacities, if applicable, for
each lubricant.
 Inspection. Here you will find instructions for inspecting the equipment or
machine. This may include electrical wiring inspections for damage or broken
parts, corroded connectors, or blown fuses. You may find details regarding
inspecting bearings, belts, hoses, or other items, depending on the
equipment in question.
 Scheduled maintenance. Here you will find a calendar-type schedule for
regular maintenance. On heavy equipment it may include changing the oil, oil
filters, or air filters, etc. On a smaller machine (like a sewing machine) there
may be periodic, scheduled maintenance for lubricated, moving parts. Other
equipment like air-conditioning systems have belts, bearings, filters, and coils
which require routine, scheduled maintenance.
 Troubleshooting tips. Most maintenance manuals have a section covering
troubleshooting tips, which are helpful in diagnosing mechanical problems in
almost any machine. Rather than randomly replacing parts to correct a
problem, you can scan the tips for a description of the problem you are
experiencing, which will be accompanied by a list of possible causes.
 Specifications. This section, if your manual includes it, will give you facts
about the machine's capabilities, performance, and capacities and may
include a description of its size, weight, power and fuel requirements.
3 Read the Table of Contents to search for general topics. On an automobile, for
instance, the Owner's Manual (which may contain a very basic maintenance manual)
will have topics such as "Optional Equipment" and "Vehicle Care."

4 Look in the Index for key words or phrases related to the specific task you
intend to perform if it is not covered in the Table of Contents.
5. Read the section which describes the task you are undertaking before you
actually start. This will help you understand what is involved and what tools you'll
need to have on hand.

6. Look for specific warnings. Working on a machine with an internal combustion

engine or equipment which uses compressed gases or other hazardous material
requires caution and awareness of dangers and risks involved.

7. Look for references to specific tools, gauges, or other specialized

equipment required to perform your maintenance or repair. Some of these are
specific to only one type or (occasionally) model of machine. If you use the machine
regularly, it may be worthwhile to invest in any tools or equipment used in servicing
and repairing it.

8. Try using other, "outside" resources mentioned in the manual for repairs or
problems that the maintenance manual does not thoroughly cover. Many
manuals include toll-free phone numbers and web addresses.

9. Follow instructions carefully when performing any maintenance until you

are familiar with the procedure. Recheck your work, and test it if possible.

What Is It

Different types of Equipment

1. A chop saw is a power tool that used to make straight cuts in pipes and wood.
It may have features that allow it to cut angles of a pipe Below are the parts of a
chop saw.

2. RIDGID 00-R, 12-R and 11-R Threaders are designed to thread pipe or
conduitusing individual die heads for each size of pipe and a manually operated
ratchet.

3. Electric grinders are electric power tools with detachable grinding wheels
thatyou can apply to a variety of jobs around your home, including sanding, grinding,
cleaning, and cutting. When using a grinder, make sure you're picking the right
attachment for the job and using that attachment correctly. Always practice safety
procedures when working with a grinder, as it can cause injury, both from the blade
itself and from flying debris.

What I Have Learned

Procedures

1. CHOP SAW

For safe operation, read the instruction manual. Do not use toothed blades.
Use only reinforced wheels rated 4100 RPM or higher. When servicing use only
identical replacement parts. ALWAYS: Wear eye protection, use guards, clamp work
in vise. Use proper respiratory protections. Do not expose to rain or use in damp
locations.

STEPS ON HOW TO CHANGE THE DISC OF A CHOP SAW

A. Disconnect the miter saw plug from the outlet.

B. Press the spindle lock and loosen the bolt.

C. Remove the chop saw blade.

D. Install the new chop saw blade.

E. Press the spindle lock and tighten the bolt

2. THREADER

A. Inspect the threader before use. Replace dies or anyother part that showsdamage
or wear. To ensure ahigh quality thread, only use RIDGID replacement dies. Worn
dies can result in poor thread qualityand high handle forces.

B. Mount the pipe firmly in a pipe vise. When threadingan existing pipe, make sure it
is secure and will notmove. Cut the end of the pipe cleanly and squarelyusing a pipe
cutter.

C. Ream the end of the pipe to remove any burrs thatmay have been produced
during the cutting of the pipe

3. ELECTRIC GRINDER

Choosing and Applying the Right Attachment for the Job.

A. Pick a wire brush attachment for cleaning and paint removal jobs. Clamp
down the item you're working on so it doesn't move around. When applying the wire
brush to the edge of something, position the angle grinder so the brush spins away
from the object you're grinding rather than into it.
B. Opt for a cutting wheel for slicing through metal, tile, or concrete. A cutting
wheel works much like a saw. You press it lightly on the object you want to slice
through, and it will make short work of things like metal rebar and tile.
C. Try a diamond tuckpointing wheel to remove mortar. If you have loose mortar
in your brickwork that you need to replace, use this wheel to do the job. Run the
wheel between the bricks, making several passes to get it all out. Try not to get
closer to the brick with the tool than 1⁄8 inch (3.2 mm).
D.Refine edges on metal tools with a grinding wheel. Metal tools get dull from
time to time, including things like ice scrapers, lawn mower blades, hoes, and
hatchets. Press a grinding wheel up against the edge with the grinder off, positioning
it perpendicular to the blade. Adjust the grinding wheel so that it's at the same angle
as the edge of the blade and the wheel will turn away from the edge rather than
towards it. Lift the wheel off for a moment. Turn the grinder on and make several
light passes along the blade, following the correct angle.
What I Can Do

1. Change the disc of the Chop Saw following the steps.

What’s New

Blueprints provide a map for building a home. The symbols on the

blueprints tell carpenters, plumbers and electricians all they need to know
about the home's design and building materials. Plumbing blueprints detail
everything from the type and size of sinks to the location of gas lines, drains
and vents. Plumbers may take extensive courses to learn to read all the
details of a plumbing blueprint. As a homeowner, familiarity with the symbols
of plumbing blueprints may help you in troubleshooting and making repairs.

These are the following steps in reading a blueprint:

1. Obtain a guide to the plumbing symbols on a blueprint. You will find

legends online, or you may obtain books from the library that list the hundreds
of symbols that might be used in a plumbing blueprint.

2. Spread the blueprint on a table, counter or other flat surface that will allow
you to read the entire page at once. Familiarize yourself with the general
layout of the house, focusing on the kitchen, bathrooms and laundry rooms,
where plumbing is concentrated.

3. Read the schedules that accompany the blueprints. A schedule is a guide

to the various symbols used in the blueprints. The schedule will specify the
type of materials to be used in the particular job.

4. Identify the symbols for major plumbing fixtures such as sinks, showers,
bathtubs and toilets. From these symbols, trace the drain lines and vents.
Consult the plumbing symbol guide if you're unsure of the meaning of any
symbols.

5. Look for other symbols for gas lines, sewer connections or water piping for
radiant heating. Plumbers handle these aspects of home building, too, and
they are included in plumber's blueprints.

USE AND SPECIFICATION OF MATERIALS

Installing pipes is a delicate task. Any plumber should be aware of the

different pipe sizes and schedules. These would help in correct pipe
installation. To have a thorough knowledge of the different pipe sizes and
schedules the following terms must be clearly differentiated:

• DIAMETER refers to the nominal internal diameter (ID) of a pipe; in

except brass and copper tube the term refers to the outside diameter

(OD) of the pipe.

The diameter of PVC and GI pipes is determined by measuring the inside

diameter of the pipe.

• SCHEDULE refers to the thickness wall of the pipe.
