BASIC LIFE SUPPORT OR BASIC LIFE SAVING

Basic Life Support or Basic Life Saving, generally refers to the type of care that first-
responders, healthcare providers and public safety professionals provide to anyone
who is experiencing cardiac arrest, respiratory distress or an obstructed airway.

FIRST AID
First Aid is an emergency care and treatment of a sick or injured person before more
advanced medical assistance, in the form of the emergency medical services (EMS)
arrives. First aid is a health practice for safety. Learning the basics may mean learning
to save someone’s life or even to save yours.

4 PURPOSES OF FIRST AID:

1. Preserve
2. Protect
3. Prevent
4. Promote

CHARACTERISTIC OF A GOOD FIRST AIDER:

 Observant
 Resourceful
 Gentle
 Tactful
 Sympathetic

BANDAGING:
Bandaging is the act of applying bandage.

USES OF BANDAGING:
1. To hold a dressing in place over a wound;
2. To create pressure over a bleeding wound for control of hemorrhage;
3. To secure a splint of an injured part of the body, and;
4. To provide support to an injured part.

GENERAL PRINCIPLE OF BANDAGING:

A bandage:
- should never be applied directly over a wound.

- should be applied firmly and fastened securely.

- should not be applied so tightly that it stops circulation or so loosely that it
allows the dressing to slip.

TRIANGULAR AND CRAVAT BANDAGES

 A standard triangular bandage is made from a piece of cloth approximately 40
inches square by folding the square diagonally and cutting along the fold.
 The triangular bandage is also used to make tourniquet, to support fractures and
dislocation, to apply splints, and to form slings.
 In emergencies, a triangular bandage can be improvised from a clean
handkerchief, a clean piece of shirt etc.

When a triangular bandage is folded, it is known as a “cravat”:

 Medium cravat- is made by folding lengthwise along a line midway between

the base and the new top of the bandage in effect, folding the wide cravat
bandage in half lengthwise.
 Narrow cravat- is made by repeating the folding.

TRIANGULAR BANDAGE OF HEAD / SCALP:

Used to hold dressings on the forehead or scalp.
1. Place middle of base of triangle so that edge is just above the eyebrows and
bring apex backward, allowing it to drop over the head.
2. Bring ends of triangle backward above ears.
3. cross ends over apex at the back of head, carry ends around forehead, and tie
them in square knot.
4. turn up apex of bandage toward top of head.

TRIANGLE BANDAGE OF CHEST /BACK:

Used retain dressings on burns or wounds.
1. Drop apex of triangle over shoulder on injured side. Bring bandage down over
chest (or back) to cover dressing and so that middle of bas of bandage is
directly below injury. Turn up a cuff at base.
2. Carry ends around body and tie in a square knot.
3. Bring apex down and tie to one end of first knot.

TRIANGLE BANDAGE OF HAND:

1. Place middle of base of triangle well up on palm surface of wrist.

2. Carry apex around ends of fingers and cover back (dorsum) of hand to wrist.
3. Tuck excess fullness of bandage into small pleats on both sides of fingers.
4. Cross each half of bandage toward opposite sides of wrist.
5. Bring ends of triangle around wrist.
6. Tie ends in square knot.

CRAVAT OF HEAD / EAR:

Used to apply pressure to control hemorrhage from wounds of scalp, or to hold
dressings on wounds of ear or lower scalp.
1. Place middle of cravat over dressing.
2. Pass each end completely around head.
3. Tie in square know at side.

CRAVAT OF JAW:
Used to retain dressings on the chin, cheeks, and as a temporary support to immobilize
a fractured or dislocated jaw.
1. After making a triangle into cravat of proper width, place it under the chin
and carry ends upward with one end longer than the other.
2. Bring longer and over top of head. Ends should now be of equal length.
3. Pass ends around head in opposite directions and tie with square knot on the
other side of head on primary turn of cravat.

CRAVAT BANDAGE OF EYE:

Used to hold a dressing over the eye. Two cravats are required.
1. Lay center of first cravat over top of head with the front end falling over
uninjured eye.
2. Bring second cravat around head, and over injured eye and over loose ends of
fist cravat. Tie in front.
3. Bring ends of first cravat back over top of head, tying there and pulling first
cravat up and away from uninjured eye.

CRAVAT OF PALM OF HAND:

1. Lay center of first cravat over center of palm with ends down each side.
2. Bring first end (at left) under back of hand, over palm, through hollow between
thumb and palm.
3. Bring second end (at right) under back of hand, across base of thumb, and
diagonally across palm to base of little finger.

4. Cross both ends under back of hand, continue procedure, ends crossing first in
back of hand then in front of palm.
5. Tie in front of wrist.

CRAVAT OF ELBOW:
1. Place center of cravat under elbow.
2. Bring ends across each other, top end continuing up arm, and bottom end down
forearm.
3. Bring ends up to front of elbow and tie.

SHOULDER – ARMPIT CRAVAT:

1. Place cravat over dressing in armpit so the front end is longer than the back.
Carry the ends upward.
2. Bring ends cross each other over top of shoulder.
3. Cross ends over back and chest respectively to opposite armpit. Tie ends just in
front of uninjured armpit.

CRAVAT OF KNEE:
1. Place center of cravat over kneecap and let ends hang down each side of knee.
2. Cross ends underneath and continue several overlapping descending turns
down calf, and several overlapping ascending turns up thigh.
3. Bring ends together and tie under knee.

CRAVAT OF LEG / FOREARM:

1. Place center of cravat over dressing.
2. Begin ascending turns with upper end, and descending turns with lower end,
with each turn covering two-thirds or preceding turn until dressing is covered.
3. Terminate by tying both ends in square knot.

CARDIOPULMONARY RESUSCITATION (CPR)

Is a life saving technique that’s useful in many emergencies such as a heart, attack, or
near drowning, in which someone’s breathing or heartbeat has stopped.

The American Heart Association recommends starting CPR with hand and fast chest
compressions. This hands-only CPR recommendation applies to both untrained
bystanders and first responders.

C – compression – restores blood flow

A – airway – open the airway
B – breathing – breath for the person

CPR STEPS
 Check the scene for safety, form an initial impression and use personal
protective equipment.
 If the person appears unresponsive, CHECK for responsiveness, breathing, life-
threatening is bleeding or other life-threatening conditions using shout – tap –
shout.
 If the person does not respond and is not breathing or gasping, call for help/911
and get equipment or tell someone to do so
 Place the person on their back on a firm, flat surface
 Give 30 chest compressions
 Hand position: 2 hands centered on the chest
 Body position: shoulders directly over hands; elbow locked
 Depth: at least 2 inches
 Rate: 100 to 120 per minute
 Allow chest to return to normal position after each compression
 Give 2 breaths
 Open airway to a past neutral position using the head-tilt/chin-lift
technique
 Ensure each breath lasts about 1 second and makes the chest rise; allow
air to exit before giving next breath.\
 Continue giving sets of 30 compressions and 2 breaths for 2 minutes or 5
cycles.
