Alto Broadcasting System and

Chronicle Broadcasting Network (ABS-CBN) has been in service

since 1946. It is a Filipino Media and entertainment group based in Quezon City. It consists of News and
entertainment programs, as well as social welfare programs such as Lingkod Kapamilya: Bantay Bata
168. Indeed, this network had helped numerous Filipinos in many ways. Yet, there has been an issue
regarding the renewal of franchise of this network. It is not only because of the degradation campaign of
Mayor Duterte, now the President, back in the 2016 Presidential elections but also the fallacies of news
in different fields. But, human as we are, make mistakes, and everyone deserves another chance to
serve others for good. ABS-CBN should be allowed to renew its franchise, for it has been a huge help by
providing information, entertainment, corporate social responsibility, and even jobs to Filipinos.
ABS-CBN, being “one of the highest rating” networks, is providing unbiased and factual
statements and news to the public. In their seventy-four years of service, there were no issues this big,
regarding the renewal of its franchise. The Network has been an imperishable institution since then. In
fact, it is the oldest running television station in the Philippines. But the Network is currently in threat to
lose in business. Back in the 2016 Presidential elections, the campaign advertisement of Mayor Duterte
was failed to air, which he had legally paid for. It is a total thievery to the Network for not airing to the
national television the payed campaign advertisements. Duterte called the Gabby Lopez (Chairperson of
ABS-CBN) a thief and that he would reject the renewal of the network’s franchise. The network did not
only make this catastrophic event but they violated when they have operated a pay-per-view channel
through free-to-air signals via the Kapamilya Box Office (KBO) without any permit from the and
guidelines on conditional access. And sold Philippine Deposit Receipts or PDRs to foreigners in violation
of the Constitution, which requires one hundred percent Filipino ownership of mass media companies.
ABS-CBN may have violated some rules and caused aggravation to many, but the termination of its
franchise is not the answer. Resolving the issues and correcting the mistakes through processes is.
ABS-CBN should be able to renew its franchise for more years to continue its
service among Filipinos. We all make mistakes and it is inevitable, but it can be corrected as we develop,
grow, and learn from it. Indeed, the absurd happenstance of the issue- unaired, payed campaign
advertisement of Duterte is totally biased and unlawful, but the election was almost four years ago and
Duterte already won in spite of his unaired advertisements. Of course, everything is because of looking
for one’s own justice, but it does not necessarily mean that we will not consider giving another chance
for forgiving people’s injustice. Instead of complaining for someone’s mistakes and weaknesses,
acknowledge the goodness and strengths. Consider the fact that we are all born to criticize in this vast,
cruel world. After all, how can we know the essence of living without it.
