Experiment 7
PREPARATION OF CALCIUM CARBONATE
III. Procedure:
1. Dissolve 6 g of sodium carbonate and 7 g of calcium chloride
separately in 50 mL of distilled water.
2. Filter the solutions.
3. Warm both solutions to about 60OC.
4. Pour the calcium chloride solution into the sodium carbonate solution
and stir the mixture constantly.
5. Filter the mixture and collect the precipitate.
6. Wash the precipitate repeatedly with warm water.
7. Dry the precipitate in an oven set at 600C and then powder finally using
mortar and pestle.
Describe the color, odor, taste, physical state, and appearance of product
obtained.
B. Chemical Test
To 2 ml of calcium carbonate solution add 2ml of acetic acid and take note
of the gas procedure.
3. Flame Test
Moisten calcium carbonate with hydrochloric acid. To this mixture, dip the
nichrome wire and place in on the Bunsen burner flame. Note the color
produced in the on-luminous flame.
