Cavite

Munity
1872
Cavite A simple mutiny by the native
Filipino soldiers and laborers of the
Mutiny who turned out to be dissatisfied
with the abolition of their privileges.
Governor He insisted that the mutiny is stimulated
and prepared by the native clergy, mestizos
Izquierdo’s and lawyers as a signal of objection against
the injustices of the government such as not
Account of the Mutiny paying provinces for tobacco crops, pay
tribute and rendering of forced labor.

An attempt of Indios to overthrow the

Spanish government in the Philippines
Francisco
Zaldua
BEEN THE PRINCIPAL INFORMER AGAINST
THE THREE PRIESTS.
His statement had been the main basis for
the convictions and he had been promised
pardon in exchange for his testimony,
however, he was condemned along with the
three. He was the first to be executed
among them on February 17, 1872.
The Jesuit diary of the Ateneo Municipal for
January 21 reported that Father Burgos,
Zamora, and Guevara as well as Pardo de
Tavera, Regidor, “and others” had already
been arrested
Izquierdo’s letter to the overseas minister states
added Frs. Agustin Mendoza, and Mariano and
Feliciano Lopez (evidently mistaken for Gomez)
and the brothers Jose and Pio Basa, and Entique
Paraiso, but omitted Zamora was also arrested

Arrest in Fr. Mariano Gomez was arrested on the night of

January 21, together with his nephew, Fr.
Manila and Feliciano Gomez. But they were not included in
the list on the Jesuit report because soldiers had
Cavite still to get to Bacoor to arrest him
Priest and laymen in custody had been
arrested during the revolt prior before
having the evidence resulting to it,
All were presumed to be guilty of some
complicity in the revolt and deserving of
punishment,
Some would receive capital punishment,
others would be exiled to the Marianas,
Even those who will be not proven guilty
would be also banished to the Marianas,
Arrest in That would prove not to be true, was that

Manila and these were the only instigators of the

revolt, In fact, int the subsequent days to
Cavite come others will be arrested.
Evidence Against
Father Burgos
There were 8 declarations assembled
by Artigas, all of them points out
Burgos as the head of the
Revolutionary Government

There was one declaration from the

widow (untortured) that Sgt Lamadrid
revealed to her that he was only
moved by the parish priest of San
Pedro
Tormo (1973,11) concluded that
“the true instigators of the Cavite
Who were the revolt were not the native priest
whom Izquierdo mistakenly
Real Instigators executed but the freemasons

of the revolt? whom he did not dare to execute

fearing to provide an
international conflict
Crisostomo De Los Reyes, great-
grandson of Crisanto, drawing on
family records and traditions,
affirmed directly that these three
(Paraiso, Inocencio, and Delos
Reyes) good friends “ were in fact
the instigators of the Mutiny”
Some of the other priests like Guevara and Mendoza,
appear to have been sentenced to the Marianas for
being part of the campaign for the rights of the
Filipino Clergy.
Others like Mariano Sevilla and Toribio del Pilar were
implicated because of the letters to Burgos
Laza perhaps was arrested because he shared a
house with Zamora, although as a chaplain of the
cathedral he must have been associated with Burgos
and Zamora
All mentioned, and the others were eventually
What Happened to banished, were likely more or less active members of

those accused of what Izquierdo refer to as “junta” (there is very little

evidence that such organization existed) but rather an
being part of the alliance of those interested in liberal reforms.
Revolt There were also lawyers and businessmen that had
been arrested.
Relevance of these events
to Rizal
On National Historical Commission of the Philippines documentary, JOSE
RIZAL: Sa Landas ng Paglaya, Jose Rizal’s brother, Paciano, was a close student
of Father Jose Burgos who was fighting for the secularization Philippine of the

Philippine Church. Because of his brother’s relation to Burgos, Jose Rizal had to
use his second name (Jose Rizal) when he enrolled to ATENEO, to have a
distance from his hiding brother
