Brief Background:
A powered device that moves air is called a fan. A fan is made up of a spinning
arrangement of vanes or blades that affect the air and are typically constructed of wood,
plastic, or metal. A revolving blade and hub assembly is referred to as an impeller, rotor,
or runner.

Most individuals might confuse fans with blowers and use them interchangeably
occasionally. However, in terms of how they operate, are constructed, serve, and are
used, fans and blowers are technically distinct. However, fans and blowers are largely
utilized for air conditioning and circulation in indoor spaces, HVAC systems, industrial
processes, and electronic equipment. Contrary to popular belief, the phrase "blower fan"
is also frequently employed, especially when it comes to the blower fan in industry. This
article compares and contrasts blowers and fans in terms of their industrial applications,
working principles, and structural elements.

Research Activities
1. Centrifugal fan (all with photo)

A. What is centrifugal fan.

A mechanical device known as a centrifugal
fan is used to move gases such as air at an angle
to the incoming fluid. Centrifugal fans,
sometimes known as blowers, blower fans, or
squirrel-cage fans, may include ducted housing to direct exhaust air in a
particular direction or across a heat sink. What is unique about the centrifugal
fan is its volute casing.

B. Main parts of centrifugal fan

The impeller in a casing with a
spirally curved contour makes up
centrifugal fans. Air is injected into the
impeller axially and expelled at the
impeller's outer perimeter. The direction
of the airflow is centrifugal (or radial
direction).

C. Fan types
There are three basic types of axial fans:propeller, tubeaxial, and
vaneaxial. Propeller fans are most commonly used for dilution ventilation or
cooling.

D. Categories of fan

1. Axial and/or propeller fans.

2. Centrifugal (radial) fans.
3. Blower fans.
E. Centrifugal fan types

1. Open impeller. Open impellers have the vanes free on

both sides.
2. Semi-open impeller. The vanes are free on one side
and enclosed on the other.
3. Closed impeller. The vanes are located between the
two discs, all in a single casting.

F. Axial fan types

The propeller, tube axial, and vane axial are the three main types of axial
fans. The most typical applications for propeller fans are cooling or diluting
ventilation. These fans are frequently ceiling- or wall-mounted.

G. Fan performance

A revolving impeller is used by centrifugal fans to quicken the airstream.

The air gains kinetic energy as it travels from the impeller hub to the blade
tips. As the air slows before hitting the discharge, this kinetic energy is
subsequently transformed into an increase in static pressure.
Exceptional energy efficiency is another feature that centrifugal fans have
to offer. Centrifugal fans can produce energy at up to 84% static efficiency
when there is constant airflow. These increased levels of efficiency are perfect
for supporting bigger air systems.
2. Rotary blower (all with photo)

A. What is rotary blower

It is a device that uses rotating vanes' centrifugal force to
create artificial airflow.
Rotary lobe blowers are used in a wide range of applications,
including pneumatic conveying, waste water treatment,
aquaculture, fish farms, vacuum systems, thermal forming,
surface treatment, and others.

B. Major type

a) Positive Displacement Blowers. Rotary Lobe Blowers. Helical Screw

Blowers.

b) Centrifugal Blowers.

c) Multistage Centrifugal Blowers.

d) High-Speed Blowers.

e) Regenerative Blowers.

3. Difference between fans and blowers

The critical difference between a fan and a blower is

that a fan is typically used to move gas in an open
area while a blower is typically used to move gas in a
particular direction.
A blower directs air at high pressure concentrated at a
single area, whereas a fan can circulate air over the
entire space. A centrifugal fan has a volute casing.

4. Calculation formulas
A. Air density
air density calculator uses the following formula:
DP = 243.12 * α / (17.62 - α)
Where α is a parameter that depends on the relative humidity RH and
temperature T:
α = ln(RH/100) + 17.62 * T / (243.12 + T)

B. Velocity calculation
Velocity (v) is a vector quantity that measures displacement (or change in
position, Δs) over the change in time (Δt), represented by the equation v =
Δs/Δt.

C. Volume calculation
Flow rate = Velocity x Area of cross section. Total capacity required = 884 /
0.8 = 1105 m3/hr = 651 CFM.

D. Fan efficiency
Fan efficiency is determined by dividing the air power by the fan input power.
