conferred on him by President Ferdinand
Marcos in 1976.

► Fernando Cueto Amorsolo (born Fernando Amorsolo y Cueto; May 30, 1892 – April 24
1972) was a portraitist and painter of rural Philippines landscapes . Nicknamed the “Grand
old Man of Philippine Art, he was the first ever to be recognized as such for his
“pioneering use of impression technique” as well as his skill in the use of lighting and
backlighting in his painting’s “significant not only in the development of Philippine Art
but also in the information of Filipino nation of self identity.

the First Filipino modernist along with Galo Ocampo and Victorio Edades who broke away

► Guillermo Estrella Tolentino ( 24 July 1890- 1976) was a Filipino sculpture in Classical
stlye who was named National Artist for the Visual Arts in 1973. He is hailed as the
“Father of Phillipine Arts” He sculptured the University of the Philippines” most
recognizable emblem, the UP oblation, as well as the Bonifacio Monument in Callocan
City. This commission brought him national recognition, the design for which was choosen
in a competition organized by sculpture Vicente Francisco and Architects Andres Luna San
Pedro and Tomas Mapua. The call for designs for the monument was made on 29 August
1930. Tolentino winning design featured am obelisk with a bird of freedom perched atop of
it.

► Was born on December 13 1895 to Hilario and Cecilia Edades, He was the youngest of ten
children (six whom died of smallpox) He grew up in Barrio Bolosan in Dagupan,
Pangasinan. His artistic ability surfaced during his early years. By seventh grade, his
teachers were so impressed with him that he was dubbed “apperentice teacher” in his art
class.

► as a Filipino Cubist Painter and Illustrator. He was born Macabebe Pampanga From 1926
to 1930. He studied at the U.P School of Fine Arts. In 1949, Manansala Received a six
month grant by UNESCO to study at the école des beux- Arts in Banff and Montreal ,
Canada In 1950, he received a nine month scholarship to study at École des beuex- Arts in
Paris by the French Government.

► Cesar Legaspi on April 2, 1917 in Tondo, Manila was a Filipino National Artist awardee in
painting. He was also an art director prior to going full-time in his visual art practice in the
1960s. His early (1940s-1960s) works, alongside those of peer, Hernando Ocampo are
described as depictions of anguish and dehumanization of beggars and laborers in the city.
These include Man and Woman (alternatively known as Beggars) and Gadgets'. Primarily
because of this early period, critics have further cited Legaspi's having "reconstituted" in
his paintings "cubism's unfeeling, geometric ordering of figures into a social expressionism
rendered by interacting forms filled with rhythmic movement".

► Hernando R. Ocampo is a Filipino National Artist in the visual arts. He is also fictionist, a
playwright and editor. Ocampo was a leading radical modernist artist in the Philippines. He
was a member of the Saturday Group of artists (also known as the Taza de Oro Group), and
was one of the pre-war Thirteen Moderns, a group of modernist artists founded by Victorio
C. Edades in 1938. Famously known for his triumvirate of with neo-realists Vicente S.
Manansala and Cesar Legaspi, he did works which reflected the harsh realities of his
country after the Second World War. However, many of his works, through his skillful use
of fierce and bold colors, depicted lush sceneries and beautiful Philippine landscapes.

► Arturo Rogerio Luz, born November 20, 1926, became a Philippine National Artist
awardee in visual arts. Born in Manila, he is also a known printmaker, sculptor, designer
and art administrator. He was a founding member of the modern Neo-realist* school in
Philippine art, and received the National Artist Award, the country's highest accolade in the
arts, in 1997.He studied painting at the University of Santo Tomas in Manila and also
studied in the United States and Paris. He entered the Philippine art scene during the
1950s and had his first solo exhibition in 1951. His early work was figurative*, but he later
moved towards abstraction.

dynamic figures in the Philippine art scene from the 60s until his death in 2005.Ang
Kiukok was born in Davao City on 1 March 1931 to Chinese parents, Vicente Ang and
Chin Lim. He had four children with his wife, Mary de Jesus.

Francisco Sionil José (December 3, 1924 –
January 6, 2022) was a Filipino writer who was one
of the most widely read in the English
language.[1][2] A National Artist of the Philippines for
Literature, which was bestowed upon him in 2001,
José's novels and short stories depict the social
underpinnings of class struggles and colonialism in
Filipino society. His works—written in
English—have been translated into 28 languages,
including Korean, Indonesian, Czech, Russian, Latv
ian, Ukrainian and Dutch. He was often considered
the leading Filipino candidate for the Nobel Prize in
Literature.
