Men’s Track and Field comes out on top at the Larry Wieczorek Invite

IOWA CITY, IA., - The Illinois State men’s track and field squad hoisted the Larry Wieczorek
Invite trophy, totaling 115 points over the two-day event. Top events that contributed to the
victory were the shot put, the 200-meter dash, the 60-meter dash and the 60-meter hurdles.

“The men’s sprinters and hurdlers looked very sharp this weekend,” said Director of Track and
Field/Cross country Jeff Bovee. “Our throwers had a big day in the shot put as well.”

Senior thrower, Amiri Buchanan, posted a mark of 18.17 meters, tying his personal best and
placing first in the meet. Right behind him was senior, Joe Boyer, throwing an indoor personal
best of 17.75 meters to place second.

The Redbird speed really showed this weekend starting with, Enyinnaya Nwagwu, a junior
sprinter. He ran a time of 21.84 seconds, which placed him eighth on the program top-10 list.
That time is also a personal best for Nwagwu.

Freshman sprinter, Jaylin Holmes ran a new personal-best time of 21.87 seconds in the 200m,
which puts him 10th in program history. Holmes took second in the meet.

“Sean Hopkins in his second meet a Redbird, looked fantastic in both the long jump and the
60m,” Bovee said.

As a sophomore, Hopkins ran a personal best 6.78 in the 60m, which put him tied for sixth in
program history.

Senior hurdler, Brandon Ratliff, was another personal best for the Redbirds. Ratliff ran a time of
7.85 seconds in the 60m hurdles to further improve his No. 3 time in program history.

On the women’s side, junior sprinter, Seven Hicks ran a time of 24.42 seconds in the 200m Pro
Classic. Hicks is now tied seventh in program history, improving her personal best from 24.68
seconds to 24.42 seconds.

UP NEXT
The Redbirds will compete at Illini Challenge in Champaign, Illinois next weekend, January 27-
28. A group of Redbirds will also travel to Louisville, Kentucky to compete at the PNC Lenny
Lyles Invitational on January 28.
