The most useful bibliography on Meister Eckhart is the one that
appeared in The Thomist 42 (1978), 3 1 3 - 3 3 6 . Though not complete, it contains most of the important material. The following selective list confines itself to major contributions with emphasis on more re- cent work. Editions of Eckhart's Works All serious work on Eckhart is now based on the Kohlhammer edition described in detail in the Abbreviations. There one will also find listed all documents pertaining to his trials in Cologne and Avignon. Since the Kohlhammer edition is not yet complete, one might wish to consult, for additional, possibly genuine German works of Eckhart, the edition of Franz Pfeiffer, Meister Eckhart. Predigten und Traktate. (Leipzig, 1857; Aalen, 1962). English Translations of Eckhart's Works Meister Eckhart: The Essential Sermons, Commentaries, Treatises and Defense. Edited and translated by Edmund Colledge and Bernard McGinn. New York, 1981. Meister Eckhart: Teacher and Preacher. Translation and Introduction by Bernard McGinn with the collaboration of Frank Tobin and Elvira Borgstädt. Scheduled for publication in Spring 1986. The above two volumes furnish enough material from both the Latin and German works to provide a basis for the serious student who is unfamiliar with these two languages. Meister Eckhart: German Sermons and Treatises. Translated by M. O'C. Walshe. London and Dulverton, 1979 and 1981. These two volumes contain good translations of all the sermons contained in DW I—III and also some contained only in Pfeiffer's edition. Translations of the treatises have not yet been published. Breakthrough: Meister Eckhart's Creation Spirituality in New Transla- tion. Edited by Matthew Fox. Garden City, N.Y., 1980. Contains gen- erally reliable translations of several German sermons.

Master Eckhart: Parisian Questions and Prologues. Translated with an
introduction by Armand Maurer. Toronto, 1974. Contains material from the Latin works not in the McGinn translations. Meister Eckhart: An Introduction to the Study of His Works with an An- thology of His Sermons. James M. Clark. Edinburgh, 1957. Treatises and Sermons of Meister Eckhart. Translated by James M. Clark and John V. Skinner. New York, 1958. The last two volumes were for many years the only reliable translations available. They have since been superseded both in ac- curacy and in the amount of material they provide. The translations of Raymond Blakney (Meister Eckhart: A Modern Translation [New York and London, 1941] and C. de Β. Evans (Meister Eckhart [London, 1924 and 1931]), which are not based on the critical edition and contain numerous errors, should be avoided by the se- rious student. Lengthy Studies Albert, Karl.
