Report: Attitude of Grade 7 students towards Science

Every student has their so-called favorite subjects. Commonly, Filipino, Computer
(ICT), and MAPEH. Based on my observation, students have a hard time adapting to
the following subjects: Math, English, History, and Science. Math is primarily the arcs
nemesis of students, students get their selves confused with the right construction of
literatures, History contains a lot of events and its dates, and lastly, Science that also
consists of certain formulas, scientific occurrences and explanations, and numbers of
Scientists, Physicists, Astrologist, etc. and their discovery or inventions.
What would be a good research instrument for this kind of topic?
Research instruments can be in the form of tests, surveys, scales, questionnaire, or
even checklists. For an instance, If I were to provide the students a series of test
questions related with Science, like the components and other terminologies in the
subject, the result would be predictable. Since there are those students who is still
knowledgeable about science even though they’re not fond of it, and there are those
students who likes it but is not good at it. Therefore, running a test is not accurate in
identifying the attitude of the students towards science. Hence, I presume, that
conducting a survey would definitely provide a much more detailed information.
Wherein, surveys are much more open for the unheard opinion or outlook of the
students who has mixed and vague attitude towards the subject science. Meaning,
they could possibly speak up their thoughts and impression without feeling obliged
and pressured to answer the survey questions accordingly.
Moreover, the use of scales may also be relevant in this type of research topic. My
first choice was utilizing the ratio scale. Wherein, ratio scale allows the researcher to
compare the intervals or differences of their participant (Grade 7 students).
Furthermore, this scale has most of the characteristics of the other 3 variable
measurement scale (Nominal, Ordinal, and Interval). The emergence of the ratio
scale aids the researchers to understand the conclusive-order, interval, values, and
the true zero characteristic that is an essential factor in calculating ratios.
However, I explored around the internet in search for a research instrument that
would solely focus on measuring and identifying the attitude of the students towards
science and I found one. “A Likert scale is a type of scale used in survey research
that measures respondents’ attitudes towards a certain subject. Likert scale
questions are single-choice, closed-ended questions, and the primary benefit of
using a Likert scale is that it provides more granular information on people’s attitudes
towards a subject than a simple yes/no question type. By using a Likert scale,
researchers can assess varying levels of agreement, importance, quality, and other
factors (2021, Elliott).”
Therefore, one can conclude that, the use of a Likert scale would be the most
approachable and accurate research instrument for the grade 7 students.
