EXTERNAL GENITALIA

1. Scrotum – a divided sac of skin that hangs outside

the abdominal cavity, between the legs and at the

root of the penis

a. Under normal condition, it hangs loosely from

the attachment, providing the testes that is

below body temperature

b. Provides temperature about 2-3 ®C lower,

necessary for healthy sperm production

2. Penis – Delivers sperm into the female reproductive

tract

a. Tubular organ supplied with large vein sinuses

b. Glans penis – enlargement at the tip of the

penis, covered by a skin called prepuce or

foreskin

PHYSIOLOGY

1. Regualtion of Sex Hormone

a. GnRH stimulates release of LH and FSH from anterior pituitary

b. LH stimulates leydig cells to produce testosterone

c. FSH stimulate Spermatogenesis

2. Puberty

a. Before puberty, small amounts of testosterone inhibit GnRH release

b. Effects of testosterone

i. Enlargement of the genitals and necessary for spermatogenesis

ii. Development of secondary sexual characteristics

3. Male sexual Behavior and Male sex act

a. Testosterone is required for sex drive

b. Efferent stimulation causes erection, mucus production, emision and ejaculation


SPERMATOGENESIS

A. Sperm production

B. Occurs in the seminiferous tubules of testis

C. SPERMATOGONIA – primitive sperm cells, found in the outer edge of each tubule

D. SPERMATIDS – term for the spermatogenis gametes

E. SPERMIOGENESIS – last development, cytoplasm sloughs off and the remains are compacted in the
head, midpiece

and tail of the sperm

F. 64-72 days
