MODULE 2A

HARDWARE:
The Input Unit

OVERVIEW
Welcome! This a continuation of your 2nd Module of this Course. As you can read from the title of the Module,
you will be discussed focusing on the first element of a computer system which is the hardware. You will be taught the
major componentS of the hardware and its sub-components. How these components function and their importance. So,
read, learn, and assess your self.

OBJECTIVES
At the end of this module, you should be able to:
 Identify and describe the major component of hardware.
 Identify and describe the essential parts of each major component.
 Identify and describe the most common input devices.
 Identify and describe the most common output devices.
 Identify and describe storage devices.
 Identify and describe how input and output devices are connected to the computer.

1.0 INTRODUCTION

We all agree that when it comes to processing data, it is the hardware

(computer) that does the work in a speedy data processing operation. However, it
needs help with the different and very important components of a computer.
What component accepts data, how it is processed internally according to the
instructions. How it is stored or keep through what kind of storage device. What
output device is responsible for the hardcopy of your documents and files. Perhaps, you wonder how
and what component made the computation and other arithmetic and logical comparison of the data
you fetch into the computer. These are just some of the questions you may think of how things go in
and out on the computer.

1.1 MAJOR COMPONENTS OF HARDWARE
The following are the major component of Hardware (computer). Some authors called it the
system unit.

Input Unit
Output Unit
Central Processing Unit (CPU)
Storage or Memory Unit

1.1.1 INPUT UNIT

The Input Unit handles the reading in of data from the peopleware (user) through an input
device. This makes this unit your only link or bridge in sending the data to the central processing unit so
that this data can be converted into information. Therefore, you can't communicate with the machine
(computer) without this unit.

Here some of these input devices and its description.

Now, let’s try your understanding of the topic above by doing SAQ 2A-1.

SAQ 2A-1
Understanding the different input devices. Can you give the name of what type of
input devices are the following images?

Again let’s try assessing your understanding of the topic above by doing SAQ 2A-2.

SAQ 2A-2
Knowing the functions of each input device discussed. As mentioned also that
input devices are our only “way to communicate with the computer (machine)”. Do
you agree? If your answer is YES, support it with an explanation. And if NO, you
need to defend it.
