1.

Will disaccharides and polysaccharides give a positive result for Molisch's

test? Explain your answer.
Yes.
2. Which of the different carbohydrate tests would give a positive result for
maltose? Describe the color change.

3. Can Seliwanoff's test be used to distinguish sucrose from fructose? Explain

your answer.
In Seliwanoff’s test, sucrose and fructose show both positive and same visible results.
The sucrose and fructose both showed a Deep Cherry Red color after submerging into
the boiling water bath for 4 minutes. However, you can distinguish one substance from
another based on its appearance in the first minutes or how fast they change their
appearance as the water bath continues. After 1 minute of the water bath, the fructose
already showed a pigment of a concentrated orange, while the sucrose showed a pale
orange color. After 3 minutes of the water bath, the fructose showed a more
concentrated color than the sucrose. Eventually, after 4 minutes they both showed a
deep cherry red color.

4. Inulin is a polysaccharide composed entirely of fructose units. Which test

should be used to identify the presence of fructose? Explain your answer
The tests that one should be used to identify the presence of fructose are Seliwanoff’s
test, Benedict’s test, and Barfoed’s test. Since these are the tests that show positive
results when there is a presence of fructose in the solution.
