USDM approach for safer design

• Reducing vehicle operating speed by:

Narrowing street lane widths (from 3.65 m to a

range between 3.00 m and 3.50 m)

Making junctions more compact, including
tighter radii

Introducing a revised design for right turn lanes

Introducing traffic calming features

Post-evaluation study: USDM

Implementation on Sheikh Zayed Street
• Sheikh Zayed Street, a major arterial on Abu Dhabi Island,
was recently redesigned to enhance traffic capacity
• Travel lanes and pedestrian facilities were designed as
per USDM standards
• Sheikh Zayed Street opened in September 2012
• A study was carried out, together with major stakeholders,
to evaluate the performance of the new pedestrian
facilities
