hdc – half double crochet
rnd – round
sc2tog – single crochet 2 together (decrease)
st(s) – stitch(es)
sl st – slip stitch
reversed single crochet (crab stitch) - rsc
Note: Both Joseph and Mary are made the same way. Only the colors of their clothes are
different. For Mary, I used light blue color and for Joseph’s outfit I used forest green.
You will join each rnd with sl st and ch 1. Start with DMC Baroque size 10, ecru color.
rnd 1: mr, ch 1, sc 8 in the ring and pull tight to close; sl st to join and ch 1 – 8 sts
rnd 11: 1 sc, 1 sc, sc2tog (repeat 8 times); sl st to join and ch 1 – 24 sts
Change color: light blue for Mary and forest green for Joseph
rnd 19: sc until the first piece of thread marking the 7 sts for the arms.
Continue to stitch in BLUE. RED was used in the pictures to better illustrate the process.
Insert the hook again into that st next to the thread marking the arms and then insert it
through the 1st st after the thread marking the arms on the other side (front side of doll).
Yarn over, pull and sc.
Continue sc until you get to the next piece of thread marking the 7 sts for the arm. Repeat
the above process and continue sc until the end of rnd 19. You should have 20 sts for the
body now (20 sts between the 7 sts for the arms on each side of the body).
Do not break off the thread. You will continue with the 1st leg from where you stopped with
the body.
NOTE: You will crochet the legs in continuous rounds. Do not join rounds with sl st.
Each leg is made with 9 sts.
For rnd 9, pick the 5 sts in the front middle of the leg of the doll. You will 2 sc in each of
these 5 sts to shape the foot.
2nd leg: You can start the leg on either side of the body but I always start from the back.
Insert the hook in any one st, yo once, pull and ch 1. Then sc in that same st. Continue
following instructions for the 1st leg.
Use light blue for Mary and forest green for Joseph.
Turn the doll upside down.
Start the skirt on rnd 25 where you crocheted in the
BLO.
rnd 1: 1 sc in each st; sl st to join and ch 1 – 30 sts
The arms are made with the 7 sts you left on each side.
You can start each arm on either side of the body but I always start from the back. Using
light blue for Mary or forest green for Joseph, insert the hook in any one st, yo once, pull,
and ch 1. Then sc in that same st.
You will sc around for 9 rounds. Change color to ecru and
sc for another 2 rnds. For rnd 1, connect the two sides
(front and back) the same way you did for the body and for
the legs.
Fasten off.
Then finish the arms following tutorials 2b and 2c found in
the Notes section (see page 2).
Continue sewing the thread to the head until you cover most of the head.
Since the head will be covered with the head piece later, you don’t need to cover the whole
head with hair.
After you finish sewing the hair, grab some thread from each side in front and tie it in the
back.
row 16: 2 hdc in 1st st; 1 hdc until you get to last st; 2 hdc in last st; ch 2 and turn – 22 sts
row 18: 2 hdc in 1st st; 1 hdc until you get to last st; 2 hdc in last st; ch 2 and turn – 24 sts
row 22: 2 hdc in 1st st; 1 hdc until you get to last st; 2 hdc in last st; ch 2 and turn – 26 sts
Now you will 1 sc all around the head piece; 2 sc in each corner.
Cut two small pieces of the metallic floss. Twist them together and glue to the headpiece.
Use very little glue so it isn’t messy. The two ends of the metallic floss should meet at the
back of the doll.
Sew the eyes on rnd 7, 5 sts apart the same way you did for Mary and Joseph.
rnd 9: 1 sc, sc2tog (8 times); sl st to join and ch 1 – 16 sts
The corner that you cut is glued to the head, a round or two above the eyes. Glue the back
of the head to the felt piece as well.
Fold the right side of the felt down and then over the baby right under the head. Glue.
Cut a small piece from the bottom.
