ASSIGNMENT No.

Show your solution and be ready to be called for a recitation, failure to explain will be considered
wrong and the assignment will be void.

Instruction on the method of submission will be given by Wednesday (ChECal Lecture)

1. What is the potential energy (ft lbf) of a 10-lb mass 6 ft above a certain datum plane anywhere
on earth? The variation over the entire earth’s surface rarely exceeds one-quarter of one
percent, so that the acceleration due to gravity, within the limits of engineering accuracy, is
32.17 ft/sec2 anywhere on earth.

2. A salt solution originally 4%wt NaCl is water is evaporated until the concentration is 5%wt NaCl.
a. What percentage of the water in the original solution is evaporated?
b. What is the percentage reduction in the weight of the original solution?
3. A company receives a shipment of 50,000 lbs of two chemicals, A and B. The total cost,
excluding shipping charges is $15,000. The price of A is 50 cents/lb; the price of B is 25 cents/lb.
How many pounds of A and B were shipped?
4. Density is always expressed as mass per unit volume. If an organic liquid has a density of 0.9
g/cm3, how many ft3 are needed to hold 1,000 lb of the liquid? How many gallons?

5. It is desired to make up 100 lb of a solution containing 35%wt salt. Two solutions are available,
one containing 10%wt salt and the other containing 50%wt salt. How many kg of each solution
will be required?
