The R.A 11313 or the Safe Spaces Act is a law that define a gender based sexual harassment on different spaces or environment. Sexual harassment may happened everywhere in streets, public places, schools and training institutions, workplace and in cyber space. The scope of this law are not just for women and children but also recognize men and members of the LGBTQ+, because anyone in the society can be a victim of sexual harassment. This law addresses some gaps on the previous law like the Anti Sexual Harassment Law, this act recognized that sexual harassment may also happened in peers, by student to a teacher and by the subordinate to their senior. Where there are some cases that those harassment happened and that may also covered by the R.A 11313. This act also give a clear penalties for those who violates and clear duties for the authorities and heads of the institutions to prevent the sexual harassment. Sexual harassment may happened anytime and anywhere, this law helps us to know and understand those actions that we made and thought to be just a joke, is a form of harassment to the victim. Cursing, catcalling, wolf whistling, stalking and intrusive gazing are some examples of sexual harassment and punishable by the law. Watching the video about the RA 11313 or Safe Space Act its not only gave us a knowledge about the harmful acts that we must not to do to the others and the penalties it have but it also reminds us to be aware on what other may feel on the action that we made, intentionally or not. It is good to know that our President Duterte signed this law in order to protect all the people. Since nowadays, people are getting worse. Others did not respect individuals. Some are sexually harassed in work place, school and other public places. There are so many acts that we must refrain in order to respect their feelings as an individual. For example, the wolf-whistling and catcalling. These two are very common that maybe all of us already encountered especially when we are walking in the street alone. Just like what I’d encountered last time while I am walking, there are two LGBT in front of me and we were about to cross the street, when there have a group of construction workers who catcalled them "hoy bayot! Pangit mo", "150 arat na“. I was a little bit shocked because many people heard them. Those action that they made was rude and disrespectful, where they can be penalized because that was already stated in the R.A. 11313. Another is what we called the Online sexual harassment which is described as actual using of information and communication technology in intimidating the victims like pestering them on social media and continuing to invade in their personal space are also covered in the act and punishable. It also includes the misogynistic, transphobic, homophobic and sexist slurs. Honestly, we personally experienced doing bad things to other like taking screenshot of a sexy picture of someone and send it to the group chat without her/him permission. But after watching the video, we regretted doing such things for the fact that this is not a good habit and because of this law we already know the possible consequences that may bring to us if ever we will do the same thing again. To the fact that the rules of the Safe Space Act is regardless of the motivation to commit and action or to address a remark when he/she feels that his/her personality or physically space are threatened or offended they can file a complain against it. Even when we think that it is just a joke for us but to the person he/she feels offended and uncomfortable may consider as sexual harassment and it is covered by the safe space act. There are penalties regarding those who will violate on this acts. Any forms of harassment are prohibited in any places. We hope that all of the Filipinos will be aware to the Safe Spaces Act or RA 11313. We know that everyone of us will be benefit in this law and hoping that each of us should possess the characteristics of being kind to others. Avoid disrespecting individuals it either a women or men, old or young and even the member of LGBTQ+. Let us spread love, avoid hate and negative acts or comments. We believed that "Everyone need to be valued and respected. If you want to be respected, make sure you give others the respect that you would like in return.“
Respect everyone regardless of their gender.
