ATENEO DE MANILA (1872-1877)
At the age of 10 he studied in Ateneo Municipal
Escuela Pia (Charity School) to
Ateneo Municipal to Ateneo de Manila
RIZAL ENTERS ATENEO
He passed the San Juan De Letran entrance examination, yet
his father changed his
mind and decided to send him to Ateneo instead
Father Magin Ferrando refused to admit Jose to Ateneo
Municipal but upon the
intercession of Xerez Burgos, he was reluctantly admitted at
the Ateneo
Jose was first of his family to adopt the surname Rizal
JESUITS SYSTEM OF EDUCATION
More advance than other colleges during that period
Students were divided in two groups:
(1) Roman Empire consisting of the internos (boarders)
(2) Carthaginian Empire externos (non-boarders)
(3) These two were in constant competition for supremacy in
the class
RIZAL’S FIRST YEAR IN ATENEO (1872-1873)
First day of class in Ateneo in June 1872, Rizal first heard
Mass at the college chapel
and prayed fervently to God for guidance and success.

SUMMER VACATION
March 1873, Rizal returned to Calamba for summer vacation.
He did not enjoy it

Santa Cruz Laguna and
showed her his excellent grades
SECOND YEAR IN ATENEO (1873-1874)
Once again, he became the emperor
Rizal received excellent grades in all subjects and a gold
medal and he triumphantly
returned to Calamba for Summer Vacation
PROPHESY OF MOTHER’S RELEASE
Rizal interpreted the dream of his mother that she will be
released in three months’
time and it became true

As a normal teenager, he became interested in love stories
and romantic tales

THIRD YEAR IN ATENEO (1874-1875)
