Project Description:

A water level sensor may be defined as a system in which we can obtain the

information of water within a container or any reservoir made for storing water. Water

level sensor are really useful in reducing or preventing the loss and waste of water due

to overflow.

The operation is built on the fact that water can conduct electricity because of the

presence of minerals within it. The project makes use of a basic mechanism to detect and

display the water level in a container. It uses a total of nine probes to detect the level of

water. These probes are in different levels, increasing in height, inside the container, each

level represents about 100 mL of water. For example, level 2 corresponds to 200 mL and

level 3 is equivalent to 300 mL.

At times where the water is below the lowest level, the display is made to display

the number 0, meaning the water is under 100 mL or at least too minimal to be detected

by the lowest probe.

The project will make use of MAX6954, an ADC, which will convert the input analog

signal to a digital signal in the form of a seven-segment display. When the water level is

at 5, the seven-segment display will also display the number 5.

This project is composed of only four stages. The first stage is all about sensing

any liquid present in the container. The probes would be used to detect any signs of liquid

reaching a certain level in the container. Upon sensing that there is a presence of liquid,

the 74147, a priority encoder, will output the highest pin which has been reached by the

liquid. This output will be the input for the MAX6954 which will convert the signal to digital

so it can be displayed in a seven-segment display.

Key Materials Used:

• 74147 (Priority Encoder)

• MAX6954
• Seven-Segment Display

Success Criteria:

• To design and build a prototype of a Water Level Sensor using the materials

chosen

• To complete the project within the timetable given in the Gantt chart

• To display the corresponding number of the water level in the seven-segment

display

• To measure the water inside the container with a tolerance of +/- 20mL

How to test Success Criteria:

• Check if the detected water level is close or within the tolerance of +/- 10mL to the

actual volume of the water

• Check if the number displayed in the seven-segment display is the same as the

level reached inside the container
