Subject and Verb Agreement

A verb agrees with its subject in person and number.

Person (singular) Person (Plural)

I we
You you
he, she, it them
Number- singular or plural
1. A plural subject takes a plural verb.
Example: They like seafood.

2. Subjects joined by ‘and’ take a plural verb.

Example: Mark and Mary like juicy mangoes.

3. The number of the subject is not changed by a phrase following that subject
Example: One of the eggs is broken.
‘of the eggs’ is a prepositional phrase. The subject ‘one’ and verb ‘is’ are both singular.
4. When the compound subjects are joined by ‘or ‘, or ‘nor’, the verb agrees with the subject nearer to the verb.
Example: Either the bears or the lion has escaped from the zoo.

Activity
Circle the correct verb in each of the sentences below
1. The man with the red roses (looks, look) like you brother.
2. One of my sisters (is, are) going to France.
3. Either the boys or their father (is, are) going to the market.
4. The football players (run, runs) five miles every day.
5. The weather on the coast (appear, appears) to be good this weekend.
6. Either the lion or the bears or the loin (has, have) escape from the zoo.
7. The girls in the kitchen (cooks, cook) well.
8. The boys (rides, ride) to school every day.

Grade: Eight

SUBJECT: English
SUB TOPIC: Personification

OBJECTIVES: Using their previous knowledge students will correctly:

1. Define the term personification.

2. list examples of same and explain its effectiveness.

Concept: Personification allows writer/poets to create life and motion within inanimate objects, animals and abstract ideas.

Content: Personification is a figure of speech in which an idea or thing is given human attributes and/or is spoken of as if it were human.

Example: My alarm yelled at me this morning. As an alarm is an inanimate object one would note that it cannot speak much more to yell at someone. The writer; however,
would like the readers to not just understand that his/her alarm rang but to experience through his/her auditory sense how loud the volume of its ringing was and share in the
plight of not wanting to get out of bed.

Activity 1

Directions: Read each sentence carefully. Using your highlighter (pencil, pen, wooden crayon), identify the personification from the given sentences below and explain each
on the lines provided.

1. I like onions, but they don’t like me. Ans:__________________________________________________________________________

2. My phone is not cooperating with me today. Ans:__________________________________________________________________________
