DAILY ROUTINE, HOUSEHOLD CHORES

My daily routine is more or less the same every day. I usually get up early. It is hard to open my eyes and get out of
my cosy bed. First I go to the bathroom where I wash my teeth and face, I comb my hair then I decide what to wear.
In fact preparing breakfast does not work on a regular basis in our family. I don’t make much fuss over it(Nem
csinálok nagy ügyet belőle), I just grab a snack and drink a cup of coffee/mug of tea. They say this is unhealthy,
because breakfast is important, it gives us energy, improves memory.
As I live in ……………. I commute every day/ I live in the dormitory. I rush to school by bus/on foot. It takes …….
minutes to get there.
The school begins at 8 o’clock. Classes are forty minutes long with ten minute breaks, they take place either in our
classroom or in various labs or a gym.
I have an hour lunch break at noon. I return home in the afternoon. I start studying for the next day’s lessons. Later
on I help mom in household chores, I clean up my room, take my dog for a walk. I am quite enthusiastic about
cooking so I help a lot to prepare the meals. My mom has green fingers (szeret kertészkedni), she takes good care of
the plants.
Thanks to the advance of technology, household appliances are making our life easier by saving us time. Before the
invention of the washing machine, people used to wash their clothes by hand. Of course it was more energy efficient
and didn’t generated noise, but required a lot of time.
Many people consider the dishwasher to be a luxury, although it uses less water, and germs are killed in the hot
temperature.
In the evening I watch TV and surf the internet or play video game.
After dinner I take a shower and go to bed.
On the weekend I can recharge myself. I can devote my time to my hobbies, hang out with my friends.

MY FUTURE
Sometimes I wonder about my future, but I’ll cross that bridge when I get to it. (Ráérek aggódni ha itt lesz az ideje)
First of all I am going to study more, and focus on my career. I want a profession that will bring me joy. I believe
that a job should be like a hobby. I would like to make a difference in this world by helping other people. Ever since
I was a child, I have dreamt of curing people and healing diseases, that’s why I applied to this school. I believe that I
will become a highly skilled nurse.

Before I have a family, I would like to travel. Each country has something beautiful, each country has an interesting
historical background, beautiful sights, or amazing nature. I would enjoy both visiting churches, castles, monuments,
and lying on a beach, swimming in the ocean. People who travel notice the similarities and differences of the
countries, for instance they experience new climates, new laws, new cultures, taste new foods.

I probably will have a car. Although I prefer travelling by public transport or walk, because it costs less, we can
avoid traffic jams, and is more environmental friendly, but sometimes cars are necessary. I don’t think that I will
buy an expensive car, I would be afraid that someone steals it.
I am going to have a dog, as I passionately love animals. Animals teach us what unconditional love is, they fill us
with positive energy, they comfort us if we are sad, and they protect us from bad people, they guard the house.
I am unsure about getting married, I’m too young to bother about it.

1. EMBER ÉS TÁRSADALOM
Building friendships takes time and only some of our acquaintances become our real friends. In order to maintain a
friendship, we have to keep in contact regularly. show loyalty, trust.
Teenagers form big groups with loose connections. They enjoy hanging out after school, in shopping malls, parks.
Parents worry about the friends of their children in order not to get involved in illegal or dangerous activities
self esteem… teen culture

DESCRIBE YOUR BEST FRIEND/MOM/DAD

Friends have a lot of things in common, they normally have a similar interest, hobby or have the same problems,
spend their time together.
My best friend is my mom/brother. I look up to her/him. (felnézek rá). As for her/his appearance she is the spitting
image of grandmother. I resemble her too. She is small but athletic, as she is keen on running. Her face is oval
rhamed with short dark hair and brown eyes. She always looks elegant, prefers wearing color black, white and blue.
She is quite outgoing. I respect him/her, because she is always friendly and polite, everyone likes her company. She
is confident, and reliable, I open up to her if I have a problem and she always supports me. We never quarrel. We are
thick and thin (tűzön vizen át kitartunk). My friend has got a fantastic sense of humour, she always makes me laugh.

I don’t think look matters, we shouldn’t judge a book by its cover. I am not fashion conscious, clothes are not
important to me, I am usually casually dressed.

SHOPPING
We live in consumer society (fogyasztói társadalom), it means that we are encouraged to buy new things, new
brands in order to benefit the economy. Shops offer discounts, they continuously rearrange the shelves, customers
get bonuses and coupons. There are seasonal sales, when we can buy products at a lower price.
Tv commercials and advertisement try to influence us, they fool us that we feel better if we buy their products. It
annoys me if films are interrupted with commercials. I only embrace Pepsi commercials, they are entertaining, full
of energy. For example, Britney Spears, Beyonce and Pink sing the cover of “We will Rock you”, they nailed it
Internet is also flooded by ads, I loathe that they track our google searches and advertise what I checked on internet.
We get a lot of brochures every week, and there are billboards on the streets, but many ads give untrue information
or exaggerate the benefit of their product, or offer poor quality.

People prefer shopping in malls or hypermarkets. We find everything in one building: bookshop, toys, clothes shop,
drugstore, hairdresser, gift shop, florist, jewelleries etc. Hypermarkets are crowded, we must stand in long queues.
But they are easily accessible and have a big parking place which is free of charge. We usually go to the
hypermarket at the weekend, we have a shopping list, we take a shopping trolley, we put a coin into the trolley slot,
and spend a small fortune.
People visit small shops too, shop assistants are nicer.
We can go to the market where we can buy fresh fruits and vegetables, they don’t contain chemicals. At the market
people can buy fruits, vegetables, flowers, fish, honey, and mushroom and pickles.

I have no favourite shop in particular, but I enjoy buying beauty products and clothes. I also fancy second hand
shops, because we find here designer clothes, and rare books for better price, quality bags.

It happens that we buy a faulty product. All products have guarantee, so we can go back to the shop and complain
about it. They either fix it or give a replacement, or give a refund.

A lot of people order products from internet, the most popular sites are Wish, Ebay, Amazon. Although these
packages arrive from China or America, the shipping cost is quite small. The payment is safe and easy. Everyone
has a bank account, so if we buy something online, we transfer the money or pay with bank card. The webshop
needs the card number, expiration date, cardholder name and security code.

CARD VS CASH
I prefer cash, but I sometimes pay with bankcard though. Payment with cards is easy, we have to remember the PIN
code. Unfortunately, we can hear about crimes, some hackers clone our card and steal our money. If someone loses
the bank card, he has to call the customer service and cancel it.

If I need cash I withdraw my money from the ATM (Automated Teller Machines). I insert my card into the
machine, I enter my PIN code, I give the amount. Then I remove the card, and withdraw the money.
In foreign countries we can pay with bank card or cash, but in this latter case I need to exchange Forint into Euro.
The exchange rate is 350 HUF.

The Hungarian currency is called the forint (Ft or HUF). The name of the forint comes from the city of Florence .
From the name florentinus originates the name of florint, the later forint.

Today there are coins of 5 Ft, 10 Ft, 20 Ft, 50 Ft, 100 Ft and 200 Ft and banknotes of 500 Ft, 1000 Ft, 2000 Ft, 5000
Ft, 10 000 Ft and 20 000 Ft in circulation.
Tipping
Hungary everybody tips waiters, hairdressers and also taxi drivers. Even petrol station attendants expect some
money for pumping your car. People are expected to add a further 10%-15% to the bill.
CITY VS VILLAGE
In a city we have easy access to all modern facilities, such as transport, bank, sporting opportunities, shopping
mall. Because of the many sporting opportunities we can have a passion for (hódolhatunk) martial arts, ballgames,
extreme sports, ice sports or water sports.
In our free time we can go to theater, cinema, disco or elegant restaurant.
It is easier to find job, because there are more businesses, more companies, shops. Unemployment is growing
though.
In cities we can choose from a wide range of schools, there are high schools, vocational schools, university,
language school.
We find good hospitals, private doctors.
On the other hand homes are more expensive in the city, many families live in a flat.
Traffic is big because too many people drive a car. They pollute the air, but there are more and more green areas,
parks. It is also a problem to find parking place, but we can use public transport instead. Life is noisy, we hear
honking vehicles, loud music.
City life is more dangerous, there is a rise in crimes. There are burglaries, thieves, drug dealers, despite the
surveillance cameras and patrolling police. We see beggars and homeless individuals on the streets

Living in a village has several advantages. Air is clean, people breathe fresh air. A village is safer. House with garden
is much cheaper. They can grow fruits and vegetables, they can keep dog or chicken.
The drawback is that we have to commute every day. There is no secondary school or higher education.

HOUSE VS FLAT
Many people opt to live in the countryside, and buy a house. First of all you have more space, more privacy.
Everyone can have an own room, so siblings don’t have to share the bedroom. A house normally has a garage,
utility room, where the washing machine is, and you can hang the clothes in the open air. You can keep animals,
grow fruits, vegetables, you can have barbeque parties. On the other hand heating and electricity is expensive.

People living in urban area prefer flat over house. Flats are densely populated, walls are not sound proof. A flat is
cheaper than a house, expenses are less. You don’t have to worry about the maintenance, shoveling snow, fixing
the roof is the responsibility of the apartment staff.
Neither a house nor a flat is safe, we can easily become the target of burglars. We need to install security system,
deploy motion detector. Guard dog is another good idea.
I live in a house/ in a flat ………..in a city / in a village. I have a small street facing room / garden facing room with a
bed, wardrobe, bookcase, and desk. The furniture is brown, the wall is white, I have a big carpet on the floor. My
home is close to the center, where I used to meet my friends at the weekend. I have nice neighbors. The street is
full of trees and flowers.
ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION
The Industrial Revolution brought a lot of changes in our life. Factories have been built which resulted in the
pollution of the air, soil and water. People use dangerous and toxic materials, like pesticides, sprays, exhaust fume
from cars.
Air pollution causes global warming. Global warming means that the temperature of the Earth increases, and
climate changes. The glaciers and icecaps melt, the sea-level rises.
Trees could reduce air pollution, because they remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, but humans cut down
forests for heating, or making furniture. As a result trees cannot clean the air. Other consequences are flood,
desertification, draught, natural disasters, animals lose their habitat, cities are evacuated.

People pollute waters too. Rivers, oceans are full of garbage, plastic bottles, and oil.

Unfortunately poachers kill animals, because hunting is a sport for them. Poaching poses a growing threat to
elephants, lions, rhinoceros, whales, sharks, panda bears. They can become extinct.

Overpopulation is another problem. It means more cars, more houses, more energy, more food. Consequence is
water shortage, famine, high cost of living, pandemic, unemployment, wars.

We can slow down this process. We should ride a bike or walk. We should use solar energy, use LED bulbs,
biofuel. We must plant many trees. We must protect animals. We must collect garbage selectively, because factories
can make new things from them.

WEATHER
Hungary has a continental climate. There are 4 seasons: winter, spring, summer and autumn/fall.
Weather is unpredictable in every season, we need to listen to the weather forecast.

WINTER months are freezing cold and chilly, it snows a lot. The average temperature is below zero. The roads are
slippery and there are fogs, therefore people have to drive carefully. Storms and avalanches are frequent in the
mountains.
It is very easy to catch a cold in this season, so it is necessary to take vitamins, wear warm clothes, like winter coat,
knitted pullover, scarf, cap, gloves, and boots. Most children like winter because of the snow and winter sports.
Skiing, ice-skating, sledding are the most popular winter activities. We celebrate Christmas in December.

In SPRING the landscape is stunning, because trees are full of blossoms, people go on an excursion. Unfortunately,
the wind blows a lot, but the weather is warmer. We mustn’t forget the umbrella at home, as it often rains. After it a
rainbow appears in the sky. If it rains a lot, it causes flood, people must be evacuated. We can often see lightening
and thunders too.
SUMMER is the hottest season of the year. The average temperature is 30 degrees or higher. The sun shines
warmly, people wear skirt, shorts, T-shirt, sandals. Rivers, ponds and lakes dry up in regions where the temperature
is very high. We clearly see the star constellations, and there is a meteor shower in August.
Summer has health benefits. When skin is exposed to the sun, our body makes vitamin D, Vitamin D strengthens our
immune system, regulates insulin level, protects us against cancer. But on the other hand too much exposure to the
ultraviolet rays can cause skin cancer, and eye problems.
There is no school at this time of the year, families go on holiday and spend some quality time together. Summer
brings back lots of outdoor activities like picnics, water sports, excursions, many go to beaches or parks, and relax
under the clear blue sky. A lot of people like gardening at the weekend, they grow fruits and vegetables. In summer
we can enjoy a cold ice-cream and sweet fruits. The nature is gorgeous, we see flowers everywhere like rose, lily,
dandelion, tulip, sunflower, forget me not. We are happier during the hot months, we smile more because of the
sunlight.

AUTUMN begins in September, when a new school year starts. The weather is cool and windy. The chilly cold gets
the warm clothes out of the closet. This season is called ‘fall’ in the United States because leaves fall from the trees
The trees change their color from green to yellow and brown. In autumn people harvest grapes in order to prepare
wine. If the weather is dry and sunny in this period we call it Indian summer.
For animals now it’s time to store food for the winter and to find a cozy place for hibernation. Birds like storks,
swallows migrate south. There is a sadness because the trees are soon going to be bare.
Depression rate rises in this season, some people lose a desire to work or study, go out with friends and participate
in any social events. This kind of Seasonal depression comes and goes with the grim season. The cause is the lack of
sunlight, therefore light therapy is used as a treatment.

DESCRIBE YOUR SCHOOL

I attend Kossuth Zsuzsanna Nursing School. Kossuth Zsuzsanna was the first volunteer nurse, she established 172
military hospitals. She is also known as a freedom fighter in the Hungarian Revolution of 1848. She was the sister of
Lajos Kossuth, the leader of the revolution.
The school is situated close to the city center, it’s only 10-minute walk from the main street. Our school served as
barracks decades ago, that’s why the bars on the windows. Students have sporting opportunities, they can play
football, basketball, handball, play tennis and they can run on the sports ground, or they can go to the gym. In the
basement we find a snack bar, a shooting range, and classrooms for law enforcement students. There is a library on the first
floor. We find here valuable rare books, and dedicated books. The secretary, principal and teachers are on the second
floor. The third floor is home to well-equipped classrooms.
On the fourth floor there are demonstration rooms where students can practice nursing, and here is the computer
room too.
We find the dormitory next to the school.
Classes are 40 minutes long. We study many subjects, for example history, biology, art, math, English, nursing.
Students are creative, motivated and talented, teachers are punctual, strict, and enthusiastic.
BRITISH AND HUNGARIAN EDUCATION
Children in Hungary start school at the age of 6, they don’t wear uniform.
In Britain children start school at the age of 5. They have to wear uniform.

Hungarian kids study the alphabet first, then they read, count, and learn many other subjects.
British kids learn how to decode and understand phonics during the first year.

In Hungary, the best grade is 5, the worst mark is 1.

In English speaking countries A+ is the best grade, F is the worst.

At the age of 18 Hungarian students have a final exam, it consists of a written part and an oral part. Many pass the
exam, some fail, but they can retake this exam. After the final exam they enrol at a university, or enrol in a course or
in training providing qualification listed in the National Qualification Register (OKJ-s képzés).
At the age of 16, British students write an examination called the GCSE (General Certificate of Secondary
Education). After this they leave school and go to work, or continue their studies for the A-level exam, others enrol
at high school or university.

In the Hungarian secondary education system students can learn in vocational school, high school, and high school.
In vocational schools the focus is on learning a trade like gardening, nursing, shop assistant.

In Hungary there are less private schools than in Britain.

The tuition fee is higher in Britain, students can get scholarship in both countries.

Hungary inherited a schooling system from the Soviet Union, so the classroom environment is rigid, students cannot
go into the class during the lesson, they can leave without permission, teachers discipline a lot. Most students are
rote learners.(magol)
In Britain and America classrooms are dynamic, they express their opinion, make presentations, participate in
discussions.

At school we learn from textbooks, we learn poems by heart, memorize words. We cannot cheat, and cannot play
truant (lóg), or we are expelled.

LEARNING FOREIGN LANGUAGES

If we master a foreign language, we are able to communicate with people from other countries, we can travel
anywhere without a problem. For instance, if you get lost in a country you could ask for help. It is also great that we
understand movies and songs.
Speaking a foreign language can make you more attractive, interesting, and intelligent.
It opens up a world of job opportunities. It’s no secret that learning a foreign language can open doors to better jobs.
Because of globalization, there’s a good chance you’ll be working with people whose first language isn’t English.
We can form meaningful and lifelong friendships, because we can meet new and interesting people from other parts
of the world. We get to know their culture, traditions.
English is an international language. One out of five people can speak English!
English is the language of science, aviation, computers, diplomacy, health care and tourism. English is the official
language in 53 countries.
Children should start learning a foreign language at a very young age, later it will be easier to study a new language.
I have been learning English for …… years. I practise a lot by watching movies, series or YouTube videos with
English subtitle. I learn an English song every week. I find the lyrics on Internet. I read articles or short stories. I
chat with native speakers on Facebook, If I travel somewhere, I talk with people on the street.
At school we do different types of activities, we describe pictures, solve exercises, read texts, play Kahoot, we write
a bunch of tests. We have to memorize many words, but pronunciation is a bit difficult.
Some people think that it is unnecessary to study foreign languages. There are computer programs called ‘google
translator’ that translates a text into Hungarian.

JOBS
Where can you find jobs:
We can find a job in newspapers, job centers, or we can browse websites on internet. It is worth to check a
company’s website because many companies do not advertise. There are headhunters too, who seek and recruit
potential employees for high-paying jobs.
If we are interested in a job, we send our CV. It includes the personal data, education, work experience, skills, and
interests, and why we are the best candidates. Then we are invited to an interview. At the interview we are asked
about our strengths and weaknesses, why we applied for the position, what we know about that company. Language
knowledge and computer knowledge is very important. If we get the job we sign a contract.
We need to be qualified, and we pay taxes, so we get a pension.
Types of jobs:
- If we want to be well-paid, and have better living standards, we can work at a multinational company or we
can go abroad.
- We can start an own business. The working time is flexible, and we are in charge of the people.
- We can work for the state as a teacher, nurse, doctor, police officer, fire fighter. This job needs
responsibility, and is stressful both mentally and physically. We have to conscientious and committed too.
But the salary is not so good.
- We can be physical workers, like car mechanic, shop assistant, gardener, mason.
- Those who are attracted by fame can work in show-business, their job is to entertain us. Excellent
communicative skill and a good sense of humor are necessary here.
Number one jobs:
health care worker, IT, cutting edge technology (csúcstechnológia)
Work in shift and uniform:
There are workplaces where we might have to work in different shifts, it means that there are morning shift,
afternoon shift, and sometimes night shift too.
At several workplaces we have to wear a uniform. I personally like those jobs where a uniform is needed, it is
extremely elegant when a flight attendant, soldier, nurse or doctor hits the city in a uniform.
Is it easy to find a job?
It might be a long process to find a job, because there are many applicants for a vacant position and unemployment
is growing today. Many people are dismissed or resign and are on the dole. During this time we can attend a course,
we can be a volunteer at organizations.
What makes a job attractive?:
not monotonous, creative, competitive salary, work in team, chance for climbing up the career ladder
Is money important?
Financial security is important. I would like to support my parents. I would like to have freedom to travel around the
world, give my children the best, sending them to the best schools. I don’t want to worry about checks and I would
like to be able to visit the best doctors. I also would like to give donations to organizations that help animals, people
living in poverty, or people who need expensive medication.

COMMON ILLNESSES
The most common illnesses are:
Allergy is one of the most common illnesses, for example pollen allergy, milk allergy, gluten allergy, hayfever.
Allergy symptoms include itchy eyes, sneezing, stomach ache, rash
Our generation suffers from depression: they feel blue,
Heart attack: one feels pain in the chest that radiates into the left upper arm.
Chicken pox: the body is covered by rash
Cancer is often incurable, the patients pass away.
Food-poisoning happens if the food is contaminated (szennyezett) by salmonella or E. coli, or norovirus
If blood sugar level is high, it causes diabetes.
In cold we can easily have flu, pneumonia or tonsillitis. The symptoms of flu are pretty bad. I have a sore throat,
have a splitting headache. I can’t swallow, feel dizzy, cough and sneeze. My nose is running. I have high FEVER.
Flu is contagious.
Hypertonia, reflux is also common.

My GP (háziorvos) examines me, listens to my heart and lungs with a stethoscope, looks down my throat, takes my
blood pressure. He makes a diagnosis and decides how to treat me, prescribes a medicine.
In Hungary we pay health insurance, so we are treated free.
I am as fit as fiddle (makkegészséges vagyok) but I go for regular medical checkups. If they detect an illness early, it
is more likely to cure the patient. A medical checkup includes several tests like blood test, urine test, check vision
and condition of retina.
There are several wards (departments) in a hospital. If you call the ambulance you will be taken to the Emergency
ward. Mental illnesses are treated in psychiatry. Internal medicine is the largest department, Aids is treated at
infectology.- There is an operating theater, where surgeons work, gynaecology, psychiatrists treat patients in the
neurology.
Addiction is also a big problem in the whole world.
Addicts suffer from alcoholism and drug addiction. Both psychological and genetic factors contribute to this.
Addiction can develop easily since alcohol is available everywhere, and is accepted in western societies. Alcohol
and drug relieve pain, depression, people feel self-confidence, they can escape reality.
There are behavioral addictions too, for instance mobile addiction, gambling (játék), shopping.
Quitting (abbahagy) addiction is not easy due to the withdrawal symptoms (elvonási tünetek).

ACCIDENT, INJURIES
There is a high number of road accidents, because people drive too fast, or they drive under the influence of alcohol
or drug. It often happens that a pedestrian steps off the road without looking to the left or right.
If I see an accident, I help, because I studied first aid.
First I check if anyone is injured. If yes, I dial 104 or 112. I tell the dispatcher my name, location of the accident,
what happened, what I see.
I help until the ambulance with the paramedics arrives. There is a first-aid kit in the car with antiseptic, gauze,
plaster, syringe and scissors.
Common injuries include bruise, sprains, nose bleeds, broken arm or leg so the victim needs crutch (mankó)
If a person is not breathing, and there is no pulse I start CPR. This is a lifesaving technique, where we use 30 chest
compressions and 2 rescue breaths into the mouth.
If someone is heavily bleeding, I put clean cloth on the wound and press it, until bleeding stops.
I keep the victim warm, because they are very cold due to shock.
The victim has concussion (agyrázkódás), blurred vision (homályos látás), headache. He can be conscious
(tudatánál van) or unconscious.

 A gyógyítás egyéb módjai

Alternative medicine prefers natural treatments. In China for instance acupuncture is used instead of anaesthetics to
reduce pain. They recommend herbs (chamomile, aloe vera, mint, marigold (körömvirág)), minerals (potassium
(kálium), calcium, magnesium), special diets for ailment (betegség). They rely on the body’s own healing powers,
and believe the every illness has a mental cause.

TRANSPORT
In the modern world everybody is on the move. People travel daily, they use the public transport. We can travel by
bus, tram, underground (subway US), train, airplane or car.

Car:
The car is the most common means of transportation in the world. It is convenient because you can go anytime
anywhere. We just need a valid driver’s license, we go to the petrol station, put fuel into the car and go. It is terrible
if someone runs out of petrol. A lot of people use cars, which leads to traffic jam. Another problem with cars is the
exhaust fume because the exhaust fumes pollute the environment and they cause the greenhouse effect.
It is easy to drive a car. We push the brake pedal if we stop, we push the accelerator pedal if we want to go faster,
we change gears, and change direction with the steering wheel. We can put the car in reverse.
Traffic police (közlekedési rendőrök) patrol the roads and enforce traffic laws. We mustn’t drive faster than the
speed limit, we mustn’t drive under the influence of alcohol, we have to buckle up, we can’t park on the pavement,
understand traffic signs. We have to stop before zebra, intersection, and roundabouts. We have to look in the mirror
if we overtake another car or a scooter. We have to know how to change bulbs, and how to change a tire if we get a
puncture.
Train, bus, coach:
Trains and buses are more ecological but slow. They operate on fixed routes. We have to purchase a ticket. If we
have no ticket we have to pay a fine. If you travel by bus/train you have to go to the bus/train station, find the right
platform and get on the train. The timetable shows the departure time and platform number. We can wait beside the
platform until the train arrives. We can engage in several kinds of activities during the journey, such as reading,
listening to music, working on laptop. On the other hand trains/buses are overcrowded especially during the rush
hours.
The train/bus fleet has been replaced, they are air-conditioned and clean.
I often travel by train/bus. It happens that I need to change train/bus.
Airplane/aircraft:
There are domestic flights (belföldi), international flights, connecting flights. (átszállás), there are low-cost or
budget airlines.
We buy the airline ticket in advance online, that we print out prior to the journey.
At the airport there is an arrival side and departure side. We must go to the departure side. When we go to the airport
first we go to the check-in counter. It is advisable to commence the check-in two hours prior the departure. We
present the boarding passport or ID card if travelling to a Schengen country. Then we put our luggage on the scale, it
cannot be oversized or overweight. If it is heavier than the limit, we have to pay a fee. If we carry something fragile,
put it into the handbag.
We get the boarding pass and go through the security screening. We put our bag on the conveyor belt and go
through the metal detector. We need to take off the shoes, belt, and jewelries. The aim of this procedure is to prevent
any sharp items, weapons, liquids or other materials compromising aviation security from being taken on board
aircraft.
Then we wait in the transit area, we can buy something in the duty-free zone.
We can buy a priority ticket which means that we don’t have to stand in a long line, we can board first.
On the plane the cabin crew greets us. There are window seats and isle seats. We fasten the seat belts, and the
aircraft. The plane accelerates on the runway and takes off-
Sometimes flights are delayed, cancelled.
When the plane lands we follow the baggage reclaim sign, and collect the bag. When we arrive to our destination we
can go to the accommodation by cab (taxi), by airport shuttle bus, by train or we can rent a car.

MODERN TECHNOLOGY
Modern technology makes life easier, it competes with human power. For instance doctors operate with laser knife,
cars have navigation system, it is possible to prepare teeth or houses with a 3D printer, animals are cloned. There are
many medical researches, space exploration has developed a lot.
Technology has changed how we do the shopping. Now it is possible to live without going into the bank, banks are
accessible online, we need no cash.
We can find everything on Internet: news, ads, job offers, dating sites, events around the world.
Technology has provided us with creative ways of entertainment: we can read the newspapers and books online,
book hotel room, or flight ticket, buy ticket for museums, exhibitions, concerts, shows, and school marks can be
checked on net. We can also watch movies online, download music, play games and compete with friends or other
gamers.. Facebook is a place where we can be updated with the latest news and information.
Smartphone is a big invention, we can take beautiful photos with it.
The best thing is that we can keep contact with friends and family. We can write e-mail, make a call, use webcam,
send text message. We just install a program called Skype or Messenger. You create an account, then you log in, and
add your friends to your contact list.
There are technical problems with technology, for instance faulty connection, we need charger if battery is low. These gadgets
need update.
Because of technology many jobs are replaced by robots or machines,

Cellphones have many advantages, they are portable, we can be reached anywhere, anytime. We can add emoticons,
gifs, for example a smiling face, or hearts. We can use abbreviations, for example LOL, THX…
Disadvantage is the harmful radiation. And it is addictive, we check our newsfeed frequently, we chat a lot, some
people post too many private photos. Some people visit casino sites, play poker. People text each other even if they
sit next to each other. Unfortunately going to theater or cinema became less popular

We are often terrified by the power of hackers. They do crimes like stealing our personal details, our money.

We mustn’t forget about the cellphone etiquette. We have to turn it off at school, in theater, cinema, or if we don’t
want to disturb others. If we expect an important call, we have to inform others at the beginning of the meeting and
get their permission. We have to lower our voice. It is forbidden to use the mobile phone if we drive. The biggest
problem is online bullying, kids are harassed, verbally hurt.

We get information from media, that is television, radio, newspaper. and internet. I often / rarely watch TV and
check news on internet. I look at the weather forecast, so I know what to wear.
Some people are “couch potatoes”, they spend too much time in front of the TV or computer.
I like watching movies and series online. Watching a comedy or romance with happy ending is the best way to
cheer up. A lot of movies are informative, as they are based on real events or real characters. People are keen on
series, the story line always has a twist at the end of the episodes.
I don’t subscribe to any newspaper, I read free sites, I prefer articles about science, art, movies, gossips.
