Background/Biography of Author/s -born to the illustrious family of Portocarreros in


Plasensia in the region of Extremadura, Spain in
the early 16th century He was one of the seven
children of Pedro Portocarrero a captain of a
Spanish Schooner
- Juan de Plasencia grew up during the period
known as the Siglo de Oro a golden Age when
arts and literature flourished in many parts of
Spain among them his native extremadora
- Fray Jan de Puerto Carrero del convent de
Villanueva de la Serena was his real name
- came together with the first batch of Franciscan
missionaries in the Philippines
- arrived at a port in Cavite a few kilometers
south of Manila on the 2nd of July 1578
Reason/s of writing the primary source Juan de Placencia wrote customs of the tagalogs
to put an end to some injustices being
committed against the natives by certain
government officials

Main Argument It talks about the social status from the datus to
the saguiguilir the different customs that they do
like the usual houses that they have the dressing
that they wear the government that they have
the religious belief that they follow

Bias The author was not a filipino but he still wrote


about the customs that filipinos have. Since the
Author is not a filipino he didn’t explain it very
well like how they do a certain wedding

Importance in Understanding Philippine History It is important since it talks about our ancestors
culture. On how they live from the past
