Introduction

Marijuana, which can also be called weed, pot, dope or

cannabis is the dried flowers and leaves of the cannabis

plant. It contains mid-alerting compounds

tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC as well as other active

compounds like cannabidiol, or CDC, that are not mid-

alerting, and based on various studies there are also

different types of cannabis that had been discovered

through many years like Cannabis sativa it is characterized

by leaflets that are narrower, branches that are farther

apart and coloration that tends more towards spring green.

Marijuana is popular for the reputation of developing

a negative impact by how it’s being utilized by society as

a recreational activity for the purpose of lightening up

2

their body’s condition in relaxing, increase of sense of

sight and taste and lastly to slow the nervous systems

functionality which explains there state of minds being

blank and has no memory no pain or awareness of their

actions and surroundings thanks to properties of marijuana.

But which is why it caused so many issues and problems to

society which is present in this current stage of life

which are addiction, violence, killings, war and many more

that hadn’t been resolve by the government of each country

are struggling up against and the center of this obstacle

are humanity its self. In which used for illegal

transactions of goods to gain profits to spread their

colony for selling drugs to all ages without any consult or

approval of the government which leads to war against drugs

where anyone who is part of any organization that involves

drugs will be killed tortured and hunted by the law that

has continued until now many innocent bystanders,

individuals had been killed and injured, minors being

violent, rebellious addicted to this drugs are now wreaking

havoc with criminal mastermind who uses them for their own

selfish deeds to plan this cycle of war to go over and

over which is why the researchers conducted this study for

bringing an impact to each individual about the dangers and

knowledge about marijuana.

lan Carter, Pharm.D ,(2020) currently there are two

synthetic versions of marijuana Trusted Source. Doctors

prescribe them for the treatment of severe epilepsy and

chemotherapy side effects. Pain management the cannabinoids

in marijuana may reduce pain by altering pain perception

pathways in the brain. This may be helpful to treat

conditions that cause chronic pain, such as arthritis,

fibromyalgia, endometriosis, migraine `reduced inflammation

CBD in marijuana is thought to help reduce inflammation. In

theory, this may benefit inflammatory conditions, such as

crohn’s disease, irritable bowel syndrome, rheumatoid

arthritis. Decreasing inflammation in the body can also

improve overall health. Neurological and mental disorders

due to its effects on the limbic system, doctors sometimes

prescribe marijuana to treat the following neurological and

mental health conditions anxiety, epilepsy multiple

sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, post-traumatic stress

disorder (PTSD) Tourette syndrome. Sleep management the

relaxing effects of marijuana may help improve sleep

disorders, such as insomnia. And improved sleep may also

occur when pain is reduced from marijuana usage.

The researcher’s perception about marijuana are this herb,

plant or weed has a potential to be a medicine or drug to

4

help in Treating different medications like for cancer,

neuropathic pain, chronic pain, control epileptic seizure

and more, but marijuana had been abused by many citizens in

each country in order to benefit themselves by their act of

greed and selfishness even young teens and minors are

engaging due to being a trend or using it for forgetting

their worries and having fun due to their stress and

depression and that’s why cannabis has been recognized as a

threat because of all of its backgrounds of being misused

by humanity, rather than a possible ally to our economy it

became a natural.

The purpose of this study are to enlighten and test

the prior knowledge of each students perception about

marijuana that is not just a drug or weed that people used

for selfish desires of being happy and using it for

transactions in order to just make a profit to trick or

easily persuade the client into agreeing that’s why by

introducing the characteristics and value of marijuana it

can be an opening of acceptance and respect towards the

true value of marijuana by studying its purpose, uses,

benefits towards the medical field.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

This chapter presents the review of related literature

and studies on their Interest, Perception of Senior High

School Students on Various Types of Medical Application of

Marijuana. This part of the study accounts the works that

has been published on a topic by accredited

scholars/research and some ideas of researchers. Moreover,

this study justifies the reason for research.

Foreign Studies

Teenage Attitudes towards Marijuana and Other Illicit Drugs

According to Joseph P. (2016) this study was conducted

as public perception towards marijuana use has become more

tolerant and legislation has become more lenient. The use

of marijuana, especially among young people, has been

steadily on the increase. Previous research had indicated

that people who disapprove of a certain drug tend to not

use that drug. However, little had been known regarding

attitudes concerning drug use and how it affects people’s

perceptions of using other drugs.

However according to Palamar (2016), who is an

assistant professor in the departments of child and

adolescent psychiatry at New York University, examined how

6

demographics and lifetime use of drugs (especially

marijuana) can be a predictor of young people using harder

drugs. Data for this study was obtained from a survey that

was part of a program called Monitoring the Future. This

annual cross-sectional survey included 29,054 high school

seniors from approximately 130 public and private schools

in 48 states between 2015 and 2016.

From the data, Palamar discovered that young people

who smoked cigarettes or used more than one “hard” drug

(e.g. crack, LSD, powder cocaine) were consistently less

critical of other drug use. Lifetime alcohol use among

young people had no noticeable impact on attitudes. Those

young people who used marijuana exclusively had a tendency

to be less judgmental towards the use of drugs such as LSD,

methamphetamine and ecstasy. However, those young people

who used marijuana exclusively had less desirable attitudes

towards drugs like cocaine, crack or heroin.

Female high school students were consistently

disapproving of the use of cocaine, crack or LSD across the

board, which was expected since females are less likely to

use most drugs in comparison to males. The added dimension

of the strength of religious and spiritual background

increased attitudes against drug use. In regards to a

7

young person’s socioeconomic status, those young people

from more privileged backgrounds with highly educated

parents as well as those living in urban areas were more

tolerant of drug use. A finding that Palamar found

interested was that Black students were less disapproving

of powder cocaine, crack and ecstasy because this group

generally uses these drugs less than White students.

Reasons that were cited for that shift were strong

religious beliefs and the higher rate of arrest and

incarceration among Blacks. Also, the prevalence of

ecstasy in both rap and hip-hop music may explain that more

tolerant attitude.

While it may be difficult to prevent use of substances

like alcohol or marijuana among young people, Palamar

stated that prevention efforts should be directed towards

young people being users of multiple drugs. This can be

accomplished through changes in public health spheres and

well as policy.

Moreover according to Vidourek, R.A., King, K.A.,

Merianos, A.L, et al. (2018) marijuana use is a significant

health problem in the college student population. With some

states legalizing recreational use, it is important to

monitor students’ use of marijuana and their attitudes

8

towards legalization in order to be well prepared for

education and prevention efforts.

A sample of 291 students attending a university in

Ohio completed anonymous surveys to provide information on

their marijuana use habits and their perception of

legalization of marijuana. The data showed that over half

of the participants had smoked marijuana in their lifetime,

and just under half had done so in the past year. Many

students also reported that they had driven while under the

influence of marijuana and/or had used marijuana while

using alcohol. Students who disagreed that marijuana is

harmful to health were over 7 times more likely to have

used marijuana compared to students who had not. However,

the overall results showed that a significant number of the

students felt that marijuana should be legalized in Ohio.

A lack of knowledge among college students of the

known negative effects of marijuana was demonstrated in

this study, and leads to the potential for health care

professionals on college campus as well as campus

administration to assess the need for education and

prevention of marijuana use. Educating students on the

negative impacts that marijuana can have may be an

effective strategy. The results of this study may differ

compared to those in other states.

9

That takes away a large percentage of college students

have smoked marijuana in their lifetime. Even though

marijuana is becoming legal in some states, many students

are still unaware of the negative health outcomes related

to its use. College health care professionals can play a

role in education and prevention efforts to change this.

Local Studies

Is the Philippines ready to legalize Marijuana?

The study, conducted by Ceasar Ilao III (2019) non-

government organizations, some senators, and even the

president himself support the legislation. However, several

medical groups oppose the proposal, citing its potential

danger to the lives of Filipino citizens. Additionally,

Senator Grace Poe said that marijuana is prone to abuse.

Meanwhile, the University of the Philippines (UP)

Manila provided other arguments against the legalization.

First, while there is insufficient evidence on marijuana’s

ability to treat diseases, its harmful effects have been

documented. Marijuana use may come with short-term effects

such as drowsiness and anxiety. In the long run, it may

increase the risk of respiratory diseases, memory loss, and

dependence.
10

Still, UP Manila recognizes studies that show medical

marijuana’s positive effects on epilepsy, multiple

sclerosis, and chronic pain in adults. The institution

stated, however, that “the current evidence is still

insufficient to fulfill drug regulatory approval

requirements.”

Furthermore, according to Prof. Miguel Enrico Ayson

(2019) studies have shown that legalization in other

countries resulted in higher rates of dependence.

One survey study in the United States showed that

“residents of states with medical marijuana laws had higher

odds of marijuana use and marijuana abuse/dependence.”

However, the association between these variables still

requires further research. Prof. Miguel Enrico Ayson, a

political science professor from UP Los Baños, expressed

his concern over its implementation.“The event that

marijuana will be diverted and used for recreational

purposes is plausible due to the persistent weaknesses in

policy implementation in the Philippines,” he said that

further studies and dialogue to assess both benefits and

risks may make a compromise possible. He also saw that the

policy may be used by politicians to increase their

political leverage. In the case of the Philippines, it

wouldn’t be entirely surprising if this were to happen. As

11

it is, we can expect the debates to continue. And that’s a

good thing, as it’s proof that we are actually taking this

matter seriously.

However, according to Thomas L. (2019) around 1.67

million or two out of one hundred Filipinos aged 10 to 69

are current users of drugs, according to the results of the

2019 National Household Survey on the Patterns and Trends

of Drug Abuse, released by the Dangerous Drugs Board (DDB).

The 2019 Drug Survey estimates the current user

prevalence rate at 2.05 percent, significantly lower than

the 2018 global estimates of 5.3 percent published in the

World Drug Report 2020.

Moreover, according to Alexis R. (2019) in terms of

the general public’s awareness of dangerous drugs and

substances, shabu was seen to be the most well-known at

47.9 percent followed by marijuana at 35 percent. When

respondents were again asked about other dangerous drugs or

substances that they may be aware of, they mentioned

cocaine. Most of the respondents are also aware of the

negative effects of drug use such as problems on health,

separation from family, and damage to self-image.

When asked about institutions or people that would be

helpful to those who use drugs, 42.2 percent of the

respondents consider the household to be the most helpful,

12

followed by the police at 33.9 percent and the local

government at 26.1 percent.

Risky behavior

The survey also gave an insight into the connection of

other risky behaviors such as smoking and drinking to drug

use. It was found that those who started smoking at 15

years old and below have greater chances of becoming drug

users than others. In the same way, those who started

drinking at 18 years old and below are more likely to be

drug users than others.

Relevance of Related Study to Present Study

This study focused on the factors affecting the

perception of senior high school students towards

marijuana. Most of the studies are focused on Interest,

Perception of Senior High Students on Various types of

Medical application of marijuana. It could be concluded as

a guide for the students on how they could be enlightened

of their perception towards the various types of medical

application of marijuana.
13

Conceptual framework

This study is anchored on the findings of Tim Peter

and Coral Foust to High school student cannabis use and

perceptions towards cannabis in south central Colorado.

Based on the findings of Tim Peter (2019) says that

students in communities that permitted recreational

dispensaries used more cannabis

According to Coral Foust (2019) stated that the

thought that cannabis was less harmful, less wrong, and was

more difficult to access than high school students in

communities that did not permit recreational cannabis

dispensaries.

Researchers conducted a study for the Senior High

School Students to determine their perception according to

their prior knowledge in Various Medical Application of

Marijuana. In the current status of marijuana, the prior

knowledge of students isn’t enlightened about the benefits

and purpose of marijuana in their Perception on Various

Medical Application of Marijuana.
