1. Introduction

The Stability analysis will be carried out for the feature no.
7SE-D/C27

Slope Stability for Sections 1 - 1 and 2 - 2

will be assessed by using the computer programme
Slope/W with assumed shear strength parameters,
inferred geological and groundwater conditions.

2. Method of Analysis

The computer programme Slope/W

is used for the slope stability analysis.
The Morgenstern -Price Method is adopted to
determine the minimum Factor of Safety

3. Existing Slope Geometry, Assumptions on Soil Profile

Shear Strength Parameters and Groundwater Conditions

3.1 Existing Slope Profile

Refer to Figure 2 for the location of slope. The critical

section, Sections 1-1 and 2-2 were analyzed. The existing
profile of the section is shown in Figure 4 and 5.

3.2 Geological Model

The inferred soil profile for

Sections 1 - 1 and 2 - 2 is based on the
results of the ground investigation initiated for the feature
under CEDD Contract No. GE/2014/09.

3.3 Assumptions on Shear Strength Parameters

The soil strength adopted for the analysis are as follow:

RS c' = 4 kPa f' = 34 o

g' = 18 kN/m³

CDT c' = 5 kPa f' = 35 o

g' = 18 kN/m³

3.4 Assumptions on Groundwater Conditions

For purpose of the stability assessment, the deisgn groundwater table has been
assumed to be approximately one-third of the slope height.

1. Soil Nail Designs

1.1 Introduction

From the stability analysis presented in Section 3.0, the existing

feature 7SE-D/C27 has inadequate factor of safety which is below
the current government standards (F.O.S => 1.2)
Therefore, LPMit works by installation of soil nails will be required in
order to improve the stability of the feature.

1.2 Methodology

The slip surfaces obtained from the Stability Assessment attached in

Appendix H are adopted for the LPM design.
The length of soil nails for Sections 1 - 1 and 2 - 2 will
be designed in order to achieve the F.O.S. => 1.4 in meeting the
government standards.

1.3 Soil Nail Design Assumption

1.3.1 The stability forces required to upgrade the existing

feature are modelled using assumed anchor load with variable
magnitude.

1.3.2 High yield bars complied with BS 4449 are used for soil nails,
which are hot dip galvanized are required in BS 729.
A reduction of 2mm radius as sacrificial thickness for steel corrosion is allowed.
Diameter of Bar= 25 mm

1.3.3 Diameter of drillhole = 100 mm

with provision minimum grout cover of 10mm

1.3.4 Grade 30 cement grout with water/cement ratio

not exceeding 0.45 is used

1.3.5 The effect of shear and bending of nails across the critical surface
is considered insignificant and is neglected in the design.

1.3.6 The soil nails are bonded behind the Design Slip of FOS > 1.40 after upgrading.

1.3.7 The required factors of safety are

I) Overall Stability = 1.4

II) Bond Failure between 2.0 RS

=
grout and soil 1.5 CDT

III) Bond Failure between

= 2.0
grout and steel

IV) Tensile Failure = 1.5

1.3.8 Compressive strength for grout, fcu = 30 N/mm2

1.3.9 With reference to GEO Technical Guidance Note No. 15 (TGN 15), slips scarps within
a crest influence zone (D) of two times the feature height (H) (i.e., D = 2H) are checked
in the stability assessment.

1.4 Tensile capacity for steel bar

Apply ft = 500 N/mm²

For B25 Soil Nails,

Effective diameter = 21 mm (Allow 2mm sacrficial radius)

Allowable force, Tt = ( p / 4 x 21 ² ) x 500/1000 / 1.50

= 115.45 kN

Therefore, Allowable force, Tt = 115.45 / 1.5 = 76.97 kN / m

1.5 Skin friction between soil & grout

Diameter of drillhole= 100 mm

with provision minimum grout cover of 10mm

The following soil parameters are selected in the soil nail analysis:

Soil 1 RS c' = 4 kPa ; f' = 34 o

; g = 18 kN/m3

Soil 2 CDT c' = 5 kPa ; f' = 35 o

; g = 18 kN/m3
