Detail Done?
The name and address of the proposed independent testing organisation
Qualifications and experience of the organisation's staff to be employed in carrying out
and interpreting the testing
Written evidence of the organisation's recent experience of undertaking the specified
type of testing on similar projects
One copy of the proposed test report form
A method statement for each type of test proposed
The following particulars of the proposed materials and methods of construction using a
slurry containing bentonite or other agent shall be submitted to the Engineer
The following particulars of the proposed materials and methods of construction for
minipiles shall be submitted to the Engineer
The Contactor shall submit his proposal for setting out the piling works for review and
acceptance by the Project Manager prior to start of the piling works on the Site. The
tolerances for setting out are shown on the Drawings.
The Contractor shall submit a detailed programme prior to commencement of piling
works. He shall inform the Supervisor each day of the intended programme of piling for
the following day and shall give 24 hours’ notice of his intention to work outside
normal hours and at weekends, where this is permitted.
The Contractor shall submit on the first day of each week a progress report showing the
current progress on the piling works and the progress of all other works related to piling
works over the reporting period.
Measurement of noise, vibration, ground movement and ground level shall be taken
daily and the report of the monitoring results shall be submitted by the Contractor to the
Project Manager on a weekly basis.
For piles embedded in rock, the Contractor shall be responsible for proposing the
tentative founding level of the pile, based on the pre-drilling record and the founding
criteria stated on the Drawings. The Contractor shall submit to the Project Manager the
pre-drilling record for review, and the proposed tentative founding level for approval,
prior to the commencement of the pile construction.
The Contractor shall submit for the acceptance of the Supervisor method to prevent the
effect of “necking” in the pile shaft during concreting and withdrawal of the temporary
casing. Necking is likely to occur at the marine deposits layer and other soft soil layers
if the pile is not properly protected during concreting. Such protecting method shall
include, but not limited to, the use of steel permanent lining over the section of the soft
soil deposits. The concerned soft soil deposits shall be determined from the pre-drilling
boreholes and shall be agreed with the Supervisor.
The Contractor shall demonstrate to the Supervisor’s acceptance that the stratum
encountered is of the required rock category as specified in the Drawings and
Specification. The Contractor shall submit to the Supervisor details of the pile
excavation log and confirmation of the actual rockhead level, rock category boundary
(where appropriate) and final founding level.
The Contractor shall check the dimension and alignment of the pile shaft and bell-out of
all bored piles using the Koden test or other test method accepted by the Supervisor. If
a bell-out bit is used to form the bell-out, then approximately 25% of the piles shall be
tested as directed by the Supervisor. Testing shall be carried out for all piles where
chiselling is used to form the bell-out. The Contractor shall submit to the Supervisor for
acceptance his proposed method of checking the dimensions of the pile shaft and bell-
out.
With reference to Clause 8.53(2), the Contractor shall consider possible collapse of the
adjacent ground and ensure that adequate support is provided for the pile excavation.
The temporary casing for cast-in-situ pile construction shall be installed into the ground
by an accepted method only. During excavation, the bottom of casings shall be kept at
least 0.5 m below the excavation level so that it is sufficiently deep to prevent the flow
of soil into the casings. The Contractor shall submit the stability justification of the
temporary excavation for the acceptance of the Supervisor.
During pile excavation, the tolerance for verticality of each pile shall be frequently
checked as directed by the Supervisor. The Contractor shall submit to the Supervisor
for acceptance the method of checking prior to the commencement of pile excavation.
In the event of the verticality exceeding the allowable tolerance, the Contractor shall
rectify the pile construction by a method to be accepted by the Supervisor.

Underground obstructions and rock sockets shall be penetrated by percussive

techniques. If chiselling to form rock sockets, bell-out and to pass through underground
obstructions is proposed by the Contractor, the Contractor shall submit appropriate
method statement for the acceptance of the Supervisor, stating all the precautionary
measures including but not limited to the stability of adjacent slopes, vibration effect on
adjacent properties and checking of the dimension of the bell-out formed.
The Contractor shall submit his proposed grout mix appropriate to pressurised and
tremie grout methods to the Supervisor for acceptance prior to commencement of any
piling works.
Pile head reinforcement shall be protected against corrosion after fabrication. The
Contractor shall submit to the Supervisor for acceptance details and type of the
corrosion protection to be used.
The Contractor shall make provision for stiffening and strengthening of the
reinforcement cages to allow their installation without damage or deformation to their
specified form. The Contractor shall submit the method of temporarily positioning the
reinforcement cage before and during concreting for the approval of the Project
Manager.
Each pile shall be concreted as soon as practicable after the permission of the Engineer
has been obtained. If a tremie pipe is used, it must be watertight and of sufficient
strength. Before concreting commences, the Contractor shall submit a method statement
of placing tremie concrete to the Engineer for approval. This statement should at least
contain the proposals of the immersed depth of the tremie pipe below the upper surface
of rising concrete, procedure of safely raising the tremie pipe as concreting proceeds,
means of carrying out accurate measurement of the level of the rising concrete surface,
etc. This method statement should also include a contingency plan of necessary
measures that shall be taken to cater for any incident that the tremie pipe might become
blocked or removed from the concrete.
The Contractor shall submit a supervision plan for the Project Manager’s approval prior
to execution of works.
All reports and photographic traces from sonic tests shall be submitted to the Project
Manager within 48 hours of making the tests. The submitted materials shall become the
property of the Employer.
The Contractor shall submit a Load Test Report within 14 days of completion of each
test to the Project Manager. The Load Test Report shall include the following in
addition to the information specified in Appendix 8.1.6
Coring tests shall be carried out by an independent Specialist Contractor for Public
Works registered under the Work Category of “Ground investigation Field Works”
approved by the Project Manager to verify the integrity of the concrete and base. The
Contractor shall submit the proposed procedures for coring tests to the Project Manager
for approval at least 14 days before concreting.

Sonic tests shall be carried out for all bored cast-in-situ piles unless otherwise agreed by
the Engineer. An independent specialist-testing consultant appointed by the Contractor
and approved by the Engineer shall conduct the tests to verify the homogeneity and
integrity of the hardened concrete. The Contractor shall submit the proposed procedures
for sonic tests to the Engineer for approval at least 14 days before concreting.
