METHOD STATEMENT BLINDING CONCRETE WORKS

1. Introduction and Scope


This method statement provides the controlled sequences of work, methodology and safety precautions
that will be used to complete the Blinding and Concrete works. The content of this method statement
reflects the findings of the relevant risk assessment.

2. Location of Activity
Inside/outside of the building.

3. Scope of Work.
The method statement covers all activities related to the Blinding and Concrete works.

General Description

The purpose of this Method Statement is to give a general outline of the methodology that will be used
for Blinding and Concrete works at, The WTC to identify the risk associated during the Blinding and
Concrete works and to identify the quality control system to ensure full compliance with the client’s
requirements and as per the project specification.

The works shall be executed in accordance with the following methodology and sequence;

1. Procedure

Blinding should be required as per the issue for construction (IFC) drawings and/or
specifications, or as per instructions from the EMPLOYER’S REPRESENTATIVE, the
placing shall be on a well-compacted soil surface. Compaction tests may be performed on
the compacted area where the blinding concrete layer shall be laid depending on the
requirements. The surface shall be suitably covered prior to subsequent concrete pouring.
The concrete shall be maintained clean and free from any dust and impurities before, during
and after concrete pouring. Concrete pouring will not be permitted while the shade
temperature exceed 40°C or during period of high winds, dust storms or rain.

2.Materials

 All materials to be used for the production of concrete shall be approved and its
limits for physical, chemical and mechanical properties of concrete materials shall
be comply with Table 4.1vol 2 Part 1, General Speciation, BS, and ASTM.

3.Water

Water shall be used for concrete mixing and Curing as mentioned in Vol II Part 3,Table3-5
concrete works of project specification.
Concrete Production, Transportation, Placement, Finishing & Curing

 The water Cement Ratio shall be in accordance with the Vol II Part 3,Table3-6 Concrete
works of project Specification, and BS1881 Part 102 for Concrete works. Mix proportion
may be established from laboratory trial mixes prepared in accordance with Vol II Part 3
Concrete works of project specification shall be followed.

 Concrete trial mix designs for each concrete class should be submitted in well advance of
the work for EMPLOYER’S REPRESENTATIVE for review and approval. The
approved design mixes shall not be changed during the progress of work without
EMPLOYER’S REPRESENTATIVE approval. Any adjustment in the change of
aggregates shall be subjected to the approval of EMPLOYER’S REPRESENTATIVE
and based on additional trial mixes and retesting. Testing of concrete should be as per the
Contract Document specifications.

 Any change in the source of materials shall be subjected to the approval of


EMPLOYER’S REPRESENTATIVE.

 All cube specimens for strength tests shall be molded and laboratory-cured in accordance
with ASTM C31 and tested in accordance with ASTM C39.

 Slump test shall be in accordance with Vol II Part 3,Table3-6 Concrete works of project
Specification, ASTM C143 and shall be within 25mm to 75mm. Air content test shall be
in accordance with ASTM C231 and sufficient cube sample shall be taken to confirming
the quality of concrete.

 Fresh concrete temperature at the time of discharge shall not exceed 320C

 The batch plant should provide a print out (Delivery Ticket) containing the details as a
minimum, Grade of Concrete, Mix Design details (Contents of the Concrete), Date and
time of batching, volume of concrete etc.,
 Concrete shall be transported in truck mixer. If necessary, the drum should be cooled by
use of hessian kept wet and wrapped around. It shall be transported to site as quickly as
possible. The concrete should be discharged from the delivery truck mixer and placed in
its final position within 90min after water is first added to the mix.

 Formwork shall comply with the requirements of specification. All the forms shall be of
wood, plywood or metal and shall be built mortar tight. Area Engineer shall inspect
formwork and other levels coordination etc before placement of concrete. Formwork
shall be applied with form oil, approved by contractor before concrete placement.

4.Placement
Concrete shall not be placed until all items are in place and inspected. The Pre-Pour
Checklist shall be signed by the concern personnel after checking all the points.

 In any case placing the concrete during the night times, proper lighting arrangements and
approval from EMPLOYER’S REPRESENTATIVE shall be made for the works.

 Concrete shall be deposited as close as practicable to its final position to avoid re-
handling or moving the concrete horizontally by vibration. Concrete shall not be dropped
freely from a height in excess of 1.5meters. Concrete shall not be placed in horizontal
layers of more than 300mm thick.

 Concrete shall be placed and compacted (using vibrator) in its final position within 90
minutes of the water being added to the mix.

 A pour card shall be filled along with Request for Approval (RFA) and signed by all the
concern containing the following details as a minimum i.e. Details of the structure, Pour
Date, Start time and finish time, Weather conditions, details of any interruptions, Volume
of concrete poured, Details of sampling taken for testing etc and shall be approved by
EMPLOYER’S REPRESENTATIVE.

5.Finishing & Curing

Surface finishes shall be provided as specified in the drawings and as per project
specification and water curing shall be followed to a minimum period.

6.Protective Coating

Before receiving the structural concrete the Protective coating (3 coat of approved
bitumen rubber latex flexible damp and vapor proof liquid membrane and 1000 G
polythene sheet shall be used. Vol II, General specification concrete page 96) shall be
applied only after the repairs are completed.

7.Final Inspection & Concrete Repair

 After stripping of the form work the exposed concrete surfaces shall be rubbed down
immediately to remove the fins and other irregularities. The members shall be checked
for the laps, honeycombs, void and holes etc., In case of any such defects should be
evaluated and repaired before receiving the structural concrete.

 After pour checklist shall be filled and signed by all the parties after confirming that the
concrete structure or member complies to the drawing requirements and tolerances of
the specifications.

 The Concrete cube test results shall be documented and evaluated for the trends of the
cube strengths and a standard deviation for 28 days strength should be maintained for
various grades of concrete for this purpose

4. Responsibility

 Project Engineer:

The Project Manager and the Construction Manager have the responsibility for the overall operations of
this statement. The Project Manager and Construction Manager have the responsibility to implement the
Method statement and to delegate the responsibility to a Site Engineer and the QC Engineer to directly
supervise the work on site. The site Engineer is responsible for ensuring that all the works are executed
in accordance with the specified requirements.
The Project Manager will be responsible for the following.

 Plan and schedule the jobs, determine priorities, control workload, inspect projects and keep sufficient time
records for workflow and outputs.
 Performs technical responsibilities and make decisions to a substantial extent.
 Reviews and interprets proposed designs, drawings, and specifications for appropriateness to required
function and/or standard and initiates revisions.
 Ensure that project operations are in compliance with design specifications
 To provide all the necessary information to the site team.
 Engineer/Supervisor in charge to conduct a toolbox meeting and communicate both the Method Statement
& Risk Assessment to the workers before commencement of the activity.
 All safety precautions shall be followed as per established project safety procedure.
 Only experienced and skilled labour shall be engaged for carrying out screed work.
 People involved in the construction work shall wear PPE such as safety helmets, safety shoes, safety harness,
gloves safety glass, mask etc.as required.
 All Hose pipe joints are properly connected and tied with clips.
 Safety officer shall check and ensure that all safety precautions are followed.
 All the safety equipment’s shall be periodically inspected and checked for its durability before using them to
labor.
 Manual handling procedures to be followed
 Any incident or near miss incident shall be reported immediately to the concerned safety officer.

Site Supervisor:

The Site supervisor will be responsible for the following

 Distribution of the responsibilities to his site team.


 To provide all necessary information to his site team.
 To ensure that the works are carried out in accordance with the WMS and RA.
 To ensure the MS, ITP, & RA is communicated to the Forman and the site working team on a regular basis to
ensure that the proper work method is followed.
 To check and verify that the works completed complies with the specification prior to requesting inspection
by the consultant
 To ensure that inspections are carried out by the consultant through the main contractor’s QA/QC Engineer
prior to the next phase of activities
 To review and discuss any request that might be raised by the site working team.
 Primarily ensure that the job is being carried out to the approved WMS and ITP.

Foreman:

The Forman supervisor will be responsible for the following

 To provide the Site supervisor with daily progress reports and discuss with him planned works for the next
day.
 To ensure that all safety measures are maintained at site and workers have proper training for following all
current safety guidelines and housekeeping in accordance with the Main Contractors Safety Officer.
 To ensure good housekeeping is practiced and proper tools are being used by the site team.
 To ensure that all persons involved in the works are aware of their duties, and that they have enough
understanding of safety procedures.
 To conduct frequent toolbox meeting on safety awareness and to maintain a log of all meetings for
inspection.
 To keep a record of all toolbox talks.
 Liaises with the required personnel at the site for the required inspections with regards to safety.
 Attends all the safety coordination meetings.
 Ensure that the basic and activity specific PPE is worn regularly by the site working team.

5. Equipment Requirements

The requirements that will be engaged for Blinding and Concrete work will be as follows:
 Site In-charge.
 Charge Hand.
 Concrete Transit Mixture.
 Operator.
 Needle Vibrator.
 skilled Labour.
 Cylinder Mold
 Concrete Pump(If Required).
 Concrete Thermometer.
 Compactor

6. Health and Safety


Strictly followed as per the manufacturer’s Health and Safety recommendations for handling and use of the
materials. Ensure all involved personnel shall be aware of the same.
