Problem Set-2: SINGLE PHASE INDUCTION MACHINES

1) A 4-pole, 50 Hz, single-phase induction motor has an effective resistance and leakage reactance
of 0.4 ohm and 4 ohm respectively. If the motor is running at 1200 r.p.m. Determine the
frequencies of rotor current components and relative magnitudes of the forward and backward
fluxes and torques. Neglect magnetising current and stator impedance.
If the above motor is used as an a.c. tachometer with an auxiliary winding of effective turns 4
times that of the main winding, determine the voltage induced in the auxiliary when the shaft
speed is 1200 r.p.m., the voltage across the main winding being 22V.

2) A 220 V, single-phase induction motor has the following test results
No-load: V = 220 V, I = 6 A, P = 350 W
Locked-rotor: V = 125 V, I = 15 A, P = 580 W
The stator winding resistance is 1.2 ohm measured with direct current. Estimate the power
factor, power output, efficiency, and ratio of forward and backward fluxes when slip is 0.05.

3) A 230 V, 4-pole, 50 Hz, single-phase induction motor has the following impedances at standstill:
Main winding : r= 1.5 ohm, x= 4.0 ohm.
Starting winding : r= 5.0 ohm, x= 5.0 ohm.
Rotor Impedance (referred to main) 𝑟2′ = 0.5 ohm.
The ratio of effective turns of starting winding to main winding = 1.1.
Calculate the resistance to be added to the starting winding in order to give (a) maximum
starting torque and (b) maximum starting torque per ampere. Find in each case the starting torque
and the starting torque per ampere.
[Ans: For (a) Maximum starting torque
Resistance to be added = 2.21 ohm; Starting torque = 5.64 N-m;
Starting torque per ampere = 0.073 N-m per ampere.
For (b) Maximum starting torque per ampere
Resistance to be added = 4.04 ohm; Starting torque = 5.46 N-m;
Starting torque per ampere = 0.076 N-m per ampere.]
4) A 230 V, 4-pole, 50 Hz, split-phase induction motor has the following impedances at standstill:
Main winding : r= 1.7 ohm, x= 4.5 ohm.
Starting winding : r= 2.2 ohm, x= 5.5 ohm.
Determine the value of capacitance to be inserted in series with the starting winding to get (a)
Maximum starting torque (b) maximum torque per ampere at starting.

Capacitance to be added = 540 µF;

Capacitance to be added = 400 µF]
5) A symmetrical 2-phase induction motor with negligible resistance of the stator windings
develops a maximum torque at a reverse speed of 0.5 p.u. when balanced two-phase voltages are
applied to its stator terminals. This motor is used as a 2-phase control motor with a constant
voltage 𝑉𝑚 = 1 p.u. applied to its reference phase and a variable voltage 𝑉𝑎 applied to its control
phase. The voltages are in quadrature in time phase. Determine torque in p.u. at a slip of 0.5,
when (a) 𝑉𝑎 = 1 p.u. (b) 𝑉𝑎 = 0.8 p.u. The unit of torque is the maximum torque when 𝑉𝑎 = 1 p.u.
[Ans: For (a) 𝑉𝑎 = 1 p.u
Torque = 0.6 p.u
(b) 𝑉𝑎 = 0.8 p.u

6) The following test results were obtained on a 200 W, 220 V, 50 Hz, 6-pole single-phase induction
motor. Stator winding resistance = 12 ohm
Blocked-rotor test: V = 110 V, I = 3 A, P = 220 W.
No-load test: V = 220V, I = 1.35 A, P = 70 W.

Determine the various parameters of the motor. Hence determine the current, power factor,
output and efficiency at slip = 0.06.

Main winding : r= 2.0 ohm, x= 50 ohm.
Starting winding : r= 3.0 ohm, x= 6.0 ohm.
Determine (a) resistance and (b) capacitance in series with the starting winding for maximum
starting torque. Determine the ratio of maximum starting torques as capacitor split-phase to
resistor split-phase.

8) A small 2-pole squirrel-cage induction motor for use in control system has symmetrical two phase
stator windings. Three points on the torque-slip characteristic with balanced two-phase voltages
of 100 V at 50 Hz applied to its terminals are given below:

Slip 0.50 1.00 1.50
Determine the torque at s = 0.5 if the reference-phase voltage is kept constant at 100 V and the
Control-phase voltage is reduced to 50 V.
