1. Explain why 3-phase induction motor is self-starting and 1-phase


induction motor is not.

2. Explain with the help of schematic diagram and phasor diagram the
principle of operation of single-phase split phase induction motor.

3. Discuss the differences between resistance split phase, capacitor start,


permanent slip capacitor, capacitor start and capacitor run, and shaded
pole motor.

4. A 250W, 230 V, 50 Hz, capacitor-star motor has the following constants


for the main and auxiliary winding: main winding, Z m = (4.5 + j3.7) ohm.
Auxiliary winding Za = (9.5 + j 3.5) ohm. Determine the value of the
starting capacitor that will place the main and auxiliary winding currents
in quadrature at starting.

5. Find the mechanical power output at a slip of 0.05 of the 185 W, 4- pole,
220 V, 50 Hz, single phase induction motor, whose constants are given
below:
Resistance of the stator main winding R1 = 1.86 ohm
Reactance of the stator main winding X 1 = 2.56 ohm
Magnetizing reactance of the stator main winding X m = 53.5 ohm
Rotor resistance at standstill R 2 = 3.56 ohm
Rotor reactance at standstill X 2 = 2.56 ohm.
6. Find the mechanical power output of 200-W, 4 pole, 110-V, 60-Hz single-
phase induction motor, whose constants are given below at a slip of 0.05.

Core loss = 4.5 W, Friction and windage loss = 15.5 W.

7. A 230-V, 50-Hz, 6-pole, single-phase induction motor has the following


constants.
If the core loss is 250 W and friction and windage losses are 500 W,
determine the efficiency and torque at s = 0.05.
