Please prepare the ff:

broken crayon, rubber band,
paper clip, metal bottle cap,
stone or small rock
Total
Physical
Response
Let’s do
a mindfulness
exercise.
What properties do these solid materials have?
Learning Competency:
Describe the
special properties of solids.
PROPERTIES OF
MATTER:

Absorbency

Density

Decay/Decomposition

Special Properties of
Solids
Different kinds of solids have properties that tell
them apart from each other.
Let’s investigate the special properties of solids!
Get the assigned materials:
broken crayon
rubber band
paper clip
bottle cap
stone/rock
Copy the table in your notebook.
Material What did I do to Did the material
change the change? If yes, what
material? happened to the
material?
1. crayon

2. rock or stone

3. rubber band

4. paper clip

5. bottle cap
How do these SOLID materials differ
from each other?
Let’s investigate!

Try crushing the crayon using the rock.

What happened to the crayon?

Brittleness
ability of being easily broken into
pieces

Give more examples of brittle materials.

Let’s investigate!

Try scratching the rock with your pen.

What happened to the rock? Were you able to

scratch it?
Hardness

ability to resist from being

scratched

Give more examples of hard materials.

Let’s investigate!

Try stretching the rubber band and then

release it. Do the same thing to the paper clip.

Which material returned to its original size after

you let go of it?
Elasticity
ability to be stretched and
quickly return to its
original shape and size

Give more examples of elastic materials.

Flexibility

ability to be bent, deformed or

rolled without breaking easily

Give more examples of flexible materials.

Let’s investigate!

Try pounding the bottle cap with the small rock.

What happened to it?

Malleability
ability to be hammered, pressed,
or rolled into thin sheets without
breaking

Give more examples of malleable materials.

Let’s investigate!

Look closely at the sponge. Feel it with your

hands.

What do you notice about it?

Porosity = Absorbency

ability to allow liquids and

gases to pass through its
pores or tiny holes
Let’s investigate!
copper
Ductility

ability to be shaped into pipes

and drawn into wires without
breaking

Give more examples of ductile materials.

Think about it!

How does knowing the special properties of

solids help the makers of products?

How does knowing the special properties of

solids help you at home?
Today, we have learned that:

1. Solids have special properties.

2. Some of these properties are:

brittleness, hardness, elasticity,
flexibility, malleability, ductility, and
porosity/absorbency.
Activity:
1. In SilidLMS, open your Science class card.
