THE IMPACTS OF GLOBALIZATION

Cultural Economical Political

QUESTION TO PONDER:
As the world is getting more connected, will globalization
result to greater sameness or diversity?
HETEROGENEITY vs. HOMOGENEITY
Diversity Sameness

Heterogeneity refers to differences in identity related to class,

ethnicity, language, traditions, religion, sense of place, and
many other aspects.
HETEROGENEITY vs. HOMOGENEITY
Diversity Sameness

Homogeneity refers to the increasing sameness in the world as cultural

inputs, economic factors, and political orientations of societies expand
to create common practices, same economies, and similar forms of
government.
CULTURAL, ECONOMIC, AND POLITICAL HOMOGENEITY
With English as the world’s common language, it enables the speakers of
various languages to get connected and build common content.

Example:
“Doc Adam” or Adam Smith, an Australian
doctor-YouTuber whose “mission” is to
correct health misinformation in the
Philippines through his channel.
CULTURAL, ECONOMIC, AND POLITICAL HOMOGENEITY
Cultural Imperialism the imposition by a dominant community of various
aspects of its own culture onto another non-dominant community.

Example:

In ancient times….
When the Roman Empire conquered
Italy, they assimilated the people of
Etruria by replacing the Etruscan
language with Latin, which led to
the demise of that language and
many aspects of Etruscan civilisation.
CULTURAL, ECONOMIC, AND POLITICAL HOMOGENEITY
Cultural Imperialism the imposition by a dominant community of various
aspects of its own culture onto another non-dominant community.

Example:

In modern times…
“Americanization”
refers to the worldwide
homogenization of
societies
through the impact of
multinational
corporations.
WHAT’S THE GOAL OF
CULTURAL IMPERIALISM?

ECONOMIC: To capture markets for its cultural

commodities.

POLITICAL: To establish authority by shaping

popular consciousness.
CAN THIS BE CULTURAL IMPERIALISM?
CULTURAL, ECONOMIC, AND POLITICAL HOMOGENEITY

The World Health Organization (WHO) plays an essential role in the global governance
of health and disease; due to its core global functions of establishing, monitoring and
enforcing international norms and standards, and coordinating multiple actors toward
common goals.
Does Globalization Guarantee Fairness?
Vaccine Hesitancy
Soon after its authorization, Dengvaxia has become a
subject to controversy following Sanofi’s recent analysis
which suggests that the vaccine may put some people
at an increased risk of a more severe form of dengue.
Dengvaxia was found to reduce the overall risk of severe
dengue and hospitalizations due to this disease. This
protection, however, was more apparent in those who
had a prior history of dengue infection. Sanofi recently
discovered that individuals who have never had a
dengue infection before pose a significantly higher risk of
a more severe form of the disease and hospitalizations
with Dengvaxia than if they had not been vaccinated
against dengue at all.
