Your instructor will talk about many of these locations during your lecture classes, so it is
important for you to be familiar with where they are. Use maps you can find online to locate
the following geographic features on your blank world map.

Part 2 Measurement, scale and math review

If it has been a while since you did unit conversions or worked with the metric system of
units, read through this website http://serc.carleton.edu/mathyouneed/units/index.html
for a helpful review.

Fill in the blanks – all the information you need is provided

Prefixes and scientific notation. Fill in the blanks – all the information you need is provided.
micro () = 0.000001 = 10-6
milli (m) = 0.001 = 10-3
centi (c) = 0.01 = 10-2
deci (d) = 0.1 = 10-1
kilo (k) = 1000 = 10

Units of length – metric (S.I.) unit is the meter (m)

1m = 39.37 in
1 cm = 0.01m = 39.70in
1 in = 2.54cm = 25.4mm
1m = 1.09 yd
1 km = 1000m = 1093.613yd
1 mi = 1,760 yd = 1.609km

What is your height?

70in
176cm
1.77m

Measure the lines below.

A B

Line A 1/13in= 4cm

Line B 1in = 25.4mm
Line C 3.5in = 0.0889m

Units of volume – metric (S.I) unit is the liter (l)

1l = 33.8 fl oz
1 ml = 0.001l = 0.0338fl oz
1 fl oz = 29.572ml
1 pint = 473.176ml = 4.732dl

1 liter is equivalent to a volume of 1000 cm3 (the same as 10 cm x 10 cm x 10 cm).

If a beaker has a cross-section the size of the circle below, and a height of 10 cm, what is its
volume?

Hint: The volume of a cylinder is r2h, where r is the radius of the circle and h is height.
radius = 2.3cm
volume = 14cm3 = 0.014l

Using scales
Map scales may be presented as a ratio, or as a bar on which distances are measured. A
ratio of 1:50,000 means that every inch on the map represents 50,000 inches on the
ground.

If a map has a scale where 1 inch represents 1 mile, what would be the scale expressed as a
ratio? (Hint: you need to calculate how many inches are in a mile) 1: 63,360

On the bar below, how many miles are represented by 1 inch? 16 miles
What is this scale expressed as a ratio? 1:10,000
What is the value of point ‘X’? 15

0 10 X 20

Scale (miles)

Part 3 Google Earth

Go to https://www.google.com/earth/versions/
If possible, you should download Google Earth Pro onto your computer. If that is not
possible, you can use Google Earth on web. Google Earth on mobile does not have all of the
tools that you need to use.

In the ‘search’ box type ‘College of Staten Island’.

Zoom in and center the image, so that you can clearly see the campus. If you are using
Google Earth on web, you should switch to 2D mode and click on the compass symbol to
orient north.

What is the latitude and longitude of the CSI Library?

40°35’50.91”N 74°08’54.78”W
What is the elevation of the land at this point?
782ft

Click on the ruler symbol in the toolbar. Using the line tool, draw a straight line from the
main door of building 4N to the fountain.

How far is this straight line distance a) in miles; b) in yards; c) in km; d) in m?

a) 0.23mi

b) 406yd

c) 0.37km

d) 372m
