Et hiopia is prone t o prolonged and mult iple climat e-induced and conflict -relat ed emergencies t hat
impact children’s access t o educat ion, as well as t he second largest host of refugees in Africa, which
increases educat ional needs for addit ional st udent s on t op of it s own populat ions.  

As t radit ional gender norms and long dist ances t o school bar some from educat ion, it is imperat ive t o
implement early learning and school readiness, improved life skills educat ion and engage communit ies
t o support girls’ learning.

Wit h many schools occupied by armed forces or become inaccessible due t o conflict , displacement
and inst abilit y, t he Cent ral African Republic (CAR) has become one of t he t oughest places on eart h t o
be a child. 

Because children need access t o safe learning spaces and qualit y educat ion, t he UN Children’s Fund
(UNICEF) is priorit izing child-cent red int ervent ions t o allow st udent s t o safely ret urn t o school while
also developing sust ainable wat er, sanit at ion, and hygiene infrast ruct ure in underserved areas.

Amidst ongoing conflict and insecurit y in Niger and t he surrounding Sahel region, coupled wit h school
closures t riggered by t he COVID-19 pandemic, many st udent s have been unable t o at t end classes –
exposing t hem inst ead t o exploit at ion and abuse.  

UNICEF advocat es for int ervent ions so all children can access a qualit y educat ion, such as improved
educat ional access; behavioural and social changes; and bet t er government budget ing allocat ions t o
educat ion.

Bet ween a refugee influx and an economic crisis t hat has been exacerbat ed by t he COVID-19
pandemic, schools in Lebanon have been dealt a severe blow, even as t he dest abilized St at e faces a
rising demand for publicly funded educat ion and an increasing number of out -of-school children wit h
only limit ed resources. 

In close part nership wit h t he Educat ion Sect or, including UN agencies, t he Educat ion Minist ry has
drawn up a five-year educat ion response st rat egy t hat focuses on improving educat ional access and
t he qualit y of educat ional services and syst ems.

Aft er seven years of crisis in Syria, conflict , displacement , and insecurit y along wit h a lack of learning
spaces and qualified t eachers have caused millions of children t o miss out on educat ion. 

Wit h over 7,000 schools damaged or dest royed, int ervent ions cent res and pre-fabricat ed classrooms
are being t arget ed t o get pupils back int o t heir st udies – along wit h t eacher t raining, alt ernat ive
learning programmes and essent ial t eaching mat erials t hat meet children’s need bot h in school and in
t he communit y.

Even before most foreign aid was int errupt ed in Afghanist an aft er it was t oppled by t he Taliban last
year, decades of conflict , povert y and prolonged drought have left half t he populat ion st ruggling t o
put food on t he t able and nearly 10 million girls and boys dependent on humanit arian assist ance t o
survive.  

Of t he est imat ed 3.7 million children who are out -of-school in t he count ry, 60 per cent  of t hem are
girls, according t o UNICEF, which advocat es for t heir educat ion as bot h a moral imperat ive and an
economic necessit y.

According t o nat ional st at ist ics, 11,842 children wit h disabilit ies in Cuba – almost half of whom
st ruggle int ellect ually – at t end regular schools, as part of an inclusive educat ion process.  

Wit hin t he general educat ion syst em, inclusive educat ion provides meaningful learning for all
st udent s, allowing pupils wit h and wit hout disabilit ies t o at t end t he same age-appropriat e classes,
wit h personalized support as needed.

The UN Transforming Educat ion, Building our Fut ure Summit  will be held at t he Organizat ion’s New
York Headquart ers in Sept ember t o address t he oft en slow and unseen crisis children and yout h
worldwide are confront ing, namely equit y, inclusion, qualit y and relevance.

The Summit will provide an opport unit y t o elevat e educat ion in t he global polit ical agenda and t o
mobilize act ion t o recover pandemic-relat ed learning losses and sow t he seeds t o t ransform
educat ion in a rapidly changing world.
