5TH FORM INTEGRATED SCIENCE

Topic: Metals and Non-metals

Title: Rusting

Aim: To investigate factors that affect the rate of rusting

Materials and Apparatus: boiling tubes, iron nails, rubber bungs, tap water, soap solution, salt
solution, vinegar, boiling tube rack, labels, measuring cylinder.

Procedure:

1. Pour 60 cm3 of each liquid into a separate boiling tube.

2. Label the boiling tubes with the name of the liquids.
3. Place a similar iron nail into each boiling tube and immediately seal the tubes with the rubber
bungs.
4. Leave the nails in the same location for about two weeks.
