Human Person as a Lover of Truth

Since the early days of mankind, we have always been pursuing the truth. For us, seeking
the truth brings us closer in our answer. But what it must be use for is not that, instead, it should
be used to distinguish what is right or what is wrong. What is truth and what is false.
When trying to find the truth, humans have always tried to push the boundaries on what
can and cannot be done. Humans also question what they do already know to ascertain what they
believed to be true as the truth. That is why in more recent times, a lot of people use the phrase
“knowing my side of the story” or “knowing my truth.” What you believe to be the truth, might
be false or something else for the other party. For example, a woman saying that she was groped
in a train by a man she didn’t know, that is her truth. While for the man, he says that it was
merely an accident since the train was packed full of passengers. For the woman, her being
groped by the man is her truth, while it being an accident is the man’s truth. Of course, that is
why we have the police to ascertain or find out what really is the truth. In the two scenarios
mentioned, we can see two types of truths. The first one being convenient truth, and the second
one being empirical truth. Convenient truth, as its name suggests, is one born out of convenience,
it is merely stated when one wants to be right when they think that they are wrong, while for
empirical truth, is by finding actual evidence which we can determine on what exactly is the
truth.
What the truth is, is something not just one person can make and spread around. It is
something that is agreed upon by a group of people that has found enough evidences that it can
be considered as true and not false. After the truth has been established, and enough time has
passed, people wouldn’t question whether it really is the truth or not. Of course, since this type of
truth is something that’s made by humans and is not something more “natural,” it is a truth that
can be changed through thorough deliberation once again. This type or should I say, nature of the
truth is one that is made when the norms or values are perceived as the truth.
A more easily accepted truth is one that occurs through natural phenomena. The scientific
truth. Here, as the name suggests, truth is made in a scientific perspective. The truth that is
mentioned here is something that is based on facts, and thoroughly observed and carefully
analyzed data, it is something that cannot being manipulated, swayed, or influenced by religion,
feelings, nor opinions. An example of Scientific truth would be: the moon controls the ocean’s
tides or plants make oxygen, or that COVID-19 can spread through sneezing or coughing.
Lastly, the personal nature of the truth. It is the longest one to justify since this truth
depends on only one person to carry out. One can easily say that they are nice, but failing to
uphold that even once could easily cancel out what that person said. Since this one is the longest
one to justify, it would be harder to prove this kind of truth, spanning for a whole lifetime of a
single individual. The person trying to prove their truth would also spend a lot of time and
energy trying to prove to other people that what they say is true. Once someone believes you,
making a mistake here and there would probably be excused by the other person as something
like a rare occurrence, or something that seldom happens and can be more forgiving.
In this time where the pandemic is occurring and COVID is spreading, the truth matters
more than ever. Particularly, the scientific nature of the truth. It is through this that we’ll be
informed on what is real and is a fact, rather than false information. The people would know
what the proper protocols would be, how to minimize the spread of the virus, what it’s symptoms
are, and what to do and what not do on the off-chance that a person got infected by the virus. It is
critical that the scientific truth gets passed around to lessen the deaths that are happening around
the world and to prevent the virus from spreading even further.
In terms of my personal life, I also cherish on what the truth is, especially in having my
personal truth since it could act a big motivator for me. Like saying that I’m hardworking would
push me to break my norms and my limits to prove to everyone that I am what I say I am. Not
only would it make me a better person, it would also bring me happiness and satisfaction in
knowing that I have proven myself to the people that have doubts about me.
