Q/ why is it important the classification of DP in design and use?

Ans: due to degree of wear will affect the pipe properties and strengths.

In practice:

Soft drilling areas: 220,000 250,000 ft/string

Hard drilling areas: 180,000-210,000

2. Heavy weight drill pipe (HWDP):

It is a DP with a great well thickness.

No need for HWDP if module ration of DP/DC < 5.5

Advantages of having HWDP:

Avoid fatigue failure of DP.

Avoid buckling effect of DP.
Provide WOB.

o Buckling affect: it is a sudden change in the shape of material because of

applying too much force of weight on DP.

3. Drill Coaler (DC): it is a predominant component of BHA (bottom hole assembly.

Functions of DC:

Provide WOB for enough drilling.

Keep drilling string in tension to reduce bending stress and failure.

Types of drill coaler:

Spiral Grooving: Avoid wellbore sticking.

Square DC: provide maximum stabilization of BHA.
Monel DC: made from nonmagnetic steel, for directional survey
instruments.
