2.2 Scaling
○ Scaling law
- Scaling law란 ?
- Intuition based on macro systems does not necessarily apply to micro world because of the scaling law
- 길이: 1 m → 1 cm (100:1)
2. Electrostatic force
h
Capacitance C = ε (ε is dielectric constant)
d
Potential energy U = ½CV2 (V=E·d, where V, E are voltage and electric field strength)
1 h
U= ε (Ed )2
2 d
ε ( ⋅ h ⋅ d )E 2

- Case 1: for E=[s0], macro world에서 electric field의 breakdown(방전)이 발생하는 전계의 세기
fe = −

∂x [s ]
- Case 2: for E=[s-0.5], micro world에서는 전극간 간격 d가 작아질수록 electric field strength E의 한계
fe =

[s ]
Note: [s1]-type force scales very favorably in micro world
∴Electrostatic forces become significant in the micro domain and have numerous potential applications
∴ fm = [s ] 3
4. Muscle force
f u ∝ A (A: area of cross section)
∴ fu = s 2 [ ]
- Biological forces from muscle scale well, [s2], but may be difficult to implement.
∴ f p = s2 [ ]
○ How do other related quantities scale ?
- Scaling representation of forces
s1 ← electrostatic, surface tension
2
← electrostatic, muscle, pneumatic
F = 3
s
s ← magnetic, inertia
4
s ← some magnetic (e.g., magnetic force generated between two wires)

[s1]- and [s2]-type force에 의한 물체의 가속도는 scale down됨에 따라 증가함
2. Transient time

s
- Scale down됨에 따라 transient time t 감소 ([s4]-type force의 경우는 t 일정)
→ The time required to perform a task decreases as the system becomes scaled down
→ We know intuitively: small things tend to be quick
3. Power
Generated total power
s1 s1 s −1.5 s 0.5
F ⋅ x s 2 s1 s −1 s 2
P= = 3 1 −0.5 = 3.5
t s s s s
4 1 0 5
s s s s
4. Material strength

Spring force Fk
Fk = k·δ(x)
where k is spring constant
E bh

k = 2 3

1 − ν 4
∴ Fk = s 2 [ ]
Weight FW
FW = (ℓ·b·h)·ρ·g = [s3]
ρ: density, g: 중력가속도
∴ Scale down → spring force Fk가 weight FW에 비해 그 감소율이 더 작음

1. Scaling law
