Teaching and Assessment of Lit Studies

Journal in Academe- published as hardbound or soft copies, that
journals can be access online.
Do research because you want to. Provide all related articles
2 Diff types of Lit Review
Selective approach- doesnt have to comprehensive, just a few
source , it doesnt need a massive information. Just to support
something.
Comprehensive Approach- done in academic research, (e.g.
doctorate, master’s thesis)
Try scan master’s thesis- the reviewa supports the studies
Literary review- Chapter 1-page
We always do research if there is missing,
Literature review always a non linear, iterative (repetitive process)-
until the point you finish your Research there still need of
adjustments, corrections,
Most difficult part is entire Literature Review because it is a
foundation
Late stage - Final Stages
 Try to see the relationship or about possible factors
1. Difficult part in Lit crit- access in relevant what’s
2. Review the literature-
3. Write abt the lit
 the world wide web can be very daunting. when you search for something, it can result to numerous results
 sometimes when we are only looking for superficial information on some things, we can easily find the result we are looking for
 however, when we start looking for relevant studies or findings related to our subject or topic in research, those can be very
difficult to find
 we need to be very careful also when getting or lifting from such sources because we can be committing plagiarism
 many universities today (excluding ISU) have plagscan systems built in their library or in the school system which students and
teachers can utilize to check for any plagiarisms committed by both
 it's so convenient to just copy and paste from one source; but that is dangerous. even if we make credits and mention citations and
have a bibliography, we can still be charged.
 like i said, most universities (especially in Masters or Doctorate) require 90 to 95 % non plagiarized work. that means that as a
researcher, it is best to paraphrase rather than to coy-paste. because copying and pasting will result to a plagiarized work when
checked with a plagiarism scanner

 as researchers one thing we need to be careful about when using

online resources is that some texts/research abstracts might not be
the same with its content. so it would be best to secure an entire
research work rather than focusing only on it's abstract.

 if you really have to use the abstract content, make sure to cite the
internet source. that means we need to provide the link where we
got the information. that's for bullet one in our text
 bullet 2, i mentioned already. find the complete article
 some sites require a registration fee. others only require a company
username. like for us instructors in ISU, we have a corporate email
provided by the university. we use isu.edu.ph. my corporate email
is joymarypaddayuman@isu.edu.ph. some sites require such and it
can open a lot of different sites

 sometimes naman, some sites allow us to use their website for 7

days free, parang trial, tapos after 7 days need na magregister so
 you can access more of their content, for a certain price.
 minsan naman, our university would purchase access to the sites
tapos ishare nila ang content sa atin. pero minsan 6months lang
tayo nakaregister, minsan 1 year lang tapos it will expire.

 kaya nga finding researches and results online minsan mahirap talaga but if you know where to look, mas madali

 who among you knows google scholar?

 pag 1st sem niyo on your 4th year mapapadalas na
ang pagbisita niyo kay google scholar
 it is used specifically for searching scholarly
literature in almost any discipline.
 lahat ng mga published online na journals,
researches, articles on psychology, science,
literature, you can find on google scholar.
 when we say keywords, these are important
terms/phrases which are present in your study and
taking these keywords and placing them in the search
bar can really narrow down your seach

 boolean expressions/boolean operators adds more

focus on the search.
 it makes use of "and" or the "+" symbol

 as you can see in the example above, making use of

"+" symbol makes your search more narrow and
focused

 quotation marks also helps look but only for exact

phrases

 wildcard search makes use of the asterisk and this

helps in looking for studies that include several
variants of one word. for example, when you type
child* it will do a search that will inlcude childhood,
children, childlike, etc

satin kasi ang pinakapopular na search engine is

google. very few uses yahoo. or bing. or firefox.

ang China malamang may search engine din. their social

media platform there is weibo
03/ 16/2021

bookmarking is done for easier search and retrieval of

content of websites you have been to
for photos, just click google images.
for ebooks there are so many sources/sites. project
gutenberg is one. JSTOR. b-ok. asia.

for easier management of all references when writing

research, use mendeley.

nowadays it can be very difficult to find reliable sources

even a quick search using google can bring out a lot of links and yet
finding a reliable source can be exhausting especially in terms of
research writing

by reliable we mean able to stand against scrutiny. dependable.

true. correct.

and nothing is more important than a true and correct content or

news or information

right now, not even mainstream media is reliable.

who can help us find reliable sources? list above include teachers,
the library/librarians, and the date of publication

why do you think date of publication is important?

correct. in research writing, one of the requirements for writing the

rrl is making sure that book references are up to date. the oldest
should be utmost 10 years old. so if you are writing your RRL now,
your reference for a book should be from 2011 up to present. same
is true with theses and dissertation publication. however, you may
refer to older ones especially the trailblazing researches, yung mga
oinaka una. yung nag establish ng theories

the pyramid shows the order of reliability of materials

on top of the list are scholarly books and these of course can
be found in college/university libraries

above is an example of the book review. the one who wrote

the review on the book William Faulkner: Seeing Through
the South, provides some background on the book's content.
so anyone who would want to write about william faulkner
can have an idea about his Biography thru the book review
provided.

pag sinabi nating book review, this is an opinion written by a

reader about a book she has read.

btw, William Faulkner is the one who wrote A Rose for

Emily. i hope you knw the story

a book review can be used by a researcher to have an idea

about the entire contents of a book and then he/she can make
a decision on whether to use the book as a reference for
his/her work or not

as a writer or researcher, it is important to always document

your references or sources. like in the example above,
Aurora Newberry, a student, included all the book
information in the bottom part of the lines she lifted from the
book and that includes the name of the author, the date and
place of publication, the book title, etc. that's how we should
do research. it is a way to organize everything

bibliographies are also important in research. please refer to the three reasons found at the bottom part of the photo above.

one of the most challenging to read are scholarly articles. one reason is that it can be very technical and second, not everyone would spend
time reading such (except researchers, of course

scholarly articles are published in journals. and as such have to undergo scrutiny/reviewed before it can be published.

and scholarly articles are cited and used as references by other searchers. for a prolific researcher, he/she can become well known in
scholarly circles because he/she is cited by other scholars/researchers. but of course, it all depends on which field- engineering, sciences,
technology, language, linguistics, etc.

other sources of information are through sponsored websites,

interviews, experiment, test or observation, trade books,
encyclopedia, magazines, newspapers, listserv, etc.

but of course,
1st hand or
primary sources
are always
better
03/ 16/2021

how do we evaluate key sources? we need to look at the: title, abstract, opening paragraphs, topic sentence, closing paragraph, author
credits. Read an entire article only if a quick survey encourages you to further.
