Chapter: Introduction to Public Speaking

Presenter: GROUP 3; Benefits of Public Speaking

Lesson learned:

 Learn how to speak to an audience: speakers learn how to speak to audiences. Also,
learn to speak to a crowd in a public place.
 Learn skills that apply to one-on-one communication: speaker should be confident,
and use eye contact, gesture, body language.
 Develop the oral communication skills that are prized in the job market: learners can
apply speaking skills while interviewing for a job.
 Learn in an ideal environment for gaining experience and building
confidence: learn to build confidence in speaking, and gain a lot of experience by
practicing in school, the workplace, or other places.
 Make a contribution to the lives of other people: Learners are able to give ideas to
others, and teach others how to become good speakers as well.

Strengths

Most presenters are well prepared for their topic and give clear explanations to listeners. They
take turns speaking.

Things to be improved

Some of them feel nervous that’s why they forgot some parts of the lesson. They should control
the way they talk by slowing down when they are nervous.

Presenter: GROUP 1; The speech communication process

Lesson learned:

There are 7 elements in the speech communication process:

 Speaker: the one who delivers the speech or the source of the message to the listeners or
audiences.
 Listener: the one who receives the message from the speaker.
 Message: refer to what both speaker and listener use to communicate. The message is
divided into 2 types; verbal and non-verbal. Verbal refers to the way we speak, while
non-verbal refers to the way we feel about the speech.
 Channel: the way the message is delivered between the speaker and listener.
 Feedback: what the listener’s reaction or response. It can be non-verbal or verbal.
 Interference: defined as something that can interrupt or annoy the communication's
effectiveness during a conversation.
 Situation: time and place in which the conversation occurs.

Strengths:

Presenters use their own words clearly and calmly. Give clear explanations to the listeners. Give
detail for each point.

Things to be improved:

One of the presenters responded to many points They should help each other by taking turns.

Presenter: Group 2; Quick Guideline to Public Speaking

Lesson learned

There are 2 major points in the quick guide to public speaking. The first point is preparation. It is
divided into 11 elements such as audience, topic, purposes & central idea, finding materials,
organization, transitions, introduction, conclusion, outline, speaking notes, and practice. The
second point is delivery. Delivery includes 10 elements such as elf-confidence, approach &
beginning, eye contact, speaking rate, expressiveness, clarity and volume, gesture and
movement, use of note, enthusiasm, and ending and departure.

Strengths:

They present their point very well. Most members in the group have a chance to present the point
well. They ask questions to make it more interesting.

Things to be improved:

One or two of them don’t present. They just bring books or notes to read what they got from the
book. So, they should prepare well and don’t just read the outline, but make eye contact with
audiences.
