Learning task 1: Short-response answers

1. What did the speaker discuss about the Philippine press and journalistic freedom?

The speaker discussed a variety of pertinent issues relating to media in the Philippines, but one
that stuck with me was the critical role media plays in society. They are the ones who
disseminate information in an attempt to influence, entertain, and inform us. Media is used to
disseminate knowledge throughout the world and their first obligation of a journalist is to tell only
the truth. (American Press Institute. 2021. Additionally, we are accountable for strengthening
and broadening our knowledge in order to accept and question the information we receive.

2. What are the ethical problems that negatively impact Filipino journalism in today’s time?

One ethical problem that seriously affects Filipino journalism in today's time is the importance of
being able to distinguish fake news from truthful news. I have seen a lot of fake news and a lot
of Filipino people who have been fed on this type of click bait on Facebook, and it has been
rampant and non stop, which is sad and frustrating because it has a negative impact on the
credibility of Filipino journalism. As a citizen of the Philippines, we owe it to one another to
understand and distinguish between fake and truthful news. Sharing information online is not
automatic, as we have the ability to share and disseminate information online. We should all
exercise caution when sharing information and verify the source of news. Put an end to the
dissemination of erroneous information that contributes to confusion. (Weat, D. M. 2017)

3. How did the speaker relate the value of truth in journalistic practice? Why is it important?

The speaker provides a brief overview of the fundamentals of truth telling, which is important in
journalistic practice because it allows for more accurate reporting. When it comes to reporting
news, factual accuracy and context are critical considerations. It is required to be factual, which
means that the report must contain facts, research, and historical background information. Multi-
sourcing is critical in truth-telling; sources for a report should not be limited to a single source at
any point. For journalists, conducting research and interviewing experts are important pieces of
advice.
