CHAPTER 1
1. INTRODUCTION
We have performed our field practice at CBE of lalo kile staff , During this training, We have
learned and practiced numerous knowledge and skills about wired network configuration and
installation in CBE

Internship is a program that allows students to get practical knowledge from the working
environment as well as to experience the ability to work with people. It enables us to put into the
skill, technique, and knowledge that are important for success in our future work. As the main
purpose of this internship is, to create a linkage between the theory and practical issue I have
gained different practical knowledge in networking. Thus, this document contains all the basic
information about my work experience, basic information about the organization I stayed, how I
get oriented on my work, my duties and responsibilities, recommendation for the internship and
other topics.

1.1 BACK GROUND OF ORGANIZATION

The Commercial Bank of Ethiopia (CBE), which has been the state-owned bank , has been the
leading bank in the country by its large bases of customers, deposits, credits, assets, capital,
market share, profit, branch expansion, and others. On the other hand, private commercial banks
have been flourishing and competing by giving closely substitute banking services to take some
share of the already held and owned portion by CBE. CBE, the leading bank in Ethiopia,
established in 1942. The first bank in Ethiopia to introduce ATM Service for local users, Pioneer
to introduce Western Union Money Transfer Services and modern banking to the
country ,Ethiopia.

Now – a – day Modern Technology is being introduced in all the fields and it changes the world
with full of innovations. In Banking also electronic devices play a dominant role in order to
satisfy the growing needs of the customers. Banking system is the backbone of the economy and
Information Technology in turn has become the backbone of banking activities. The traditional
banking activities are modernized by using the Electronic – Banking system (E – Banking).
These changes are being made due to the influence of Information Technology and the
developments in the Technology of Telecommunications and Electronic Data Processing.
Information Technology which implies the integration of information system with
communication technology has altered the traditional ways of doing banking and allowed banks
to wipe out the differences in time as well as distance.

The Ethiopian banking industry is one of the service industries crucial to the growth of its
emerging economy. Banking is important in the role it plays in capital mobilization and granting
of financial facilities that is crucial to business development and growth. As business always
need to find ways of improving its products and service deliveries, it will be useful to understand
how different factors affect the adoption of E-banking system and in which way the
technological innovations can benefit the banking industries to provide service to customers.

2, Internships Overview

During Internships We have performed several Activities. Those activities managed through both
Practical activities and Theoretical activities.

2.1 Introduction

2.2 Statement Problem

As we know, customer number is increase from day to day. Due to this, there are many problems
in this district. This are:-

There is also lack of computer skilled man In the organization

There is lack of installation of network in all staff

Lack of network expansion

2.3 Objective of the internship

The industrial practice report has two main objectives. Those are general and specific objective.
2.3.1 General Objective
The general objective of my internship attachment is to configure and install wired network for
the commercial bank of Ethiopia in branch of lalo kile .

2.3.2 specific objective

To archive the general objective of the internship work in commercial bank of Ethiopia in branch
of lalo kile . The following specific activities are necessary to perform the objectives: -These
are-

 Design appropriate network topologies in commercial bank of Ethiopia in branch of lalo

kile . Installing the cables in a correct place and protect the cable from damage
 identify which cable must be used and more appropriate for a good connection
 identify network device must be used to build LAN in commercial bank of Ethiopia in
branch of lalo kile .

6
 Provide interaction between worker offices with Internet.
 configure network devices appropriately to the college To configure IP addresses and
switches and protect the network from different hacking using secure mechanism
 Avoid collision using appropriate networking device like using switch rather than using
hub.
 Distribute Internet access in each office
 Secure network service
2.4 methodology
The most activities that we done during stay in the Internships. This activities more essentially
one to develop our experience from theoretical knowledge that we had learned from 1 st year to 3rd
year. On those activities we are supported by different material from network design to crimp the
cable to Patch Panel.

Those materials are described below with their functions:

Driller Machine : We used this device for drill the wall in order to connect the trunk.

Fig 1:driller machine

Tester: is an electronic material that checks cable arrangement.

We used this networking tool for:

To test whether a given Ethernet cable is working or not and

To test whether a given Ethernet node is working or not.

To identify the arrangement of the network media.

RJ-45: A registered jack (RJ) is a standardized network interface used for network cabling,
wiring and jack construction. The primary function of registered jacks is to connect different data

7
equipment and telecommunication devices with services normally provided by telephone
exchanges or long-distance carriers We used commonly as a connector.

All RJ-45 connector has eight pins, which means an RJ-45 cable contains eight separate wires In
RJ-45 it is a standardized networking interface“45" is refers to the number of the interface

standard.

Fig 3:RJ-45

There are two types RJ. Those are:

RJ-45:used for Ethernet connections.

RJ-11: Used in telephone interface that uses a cable of twisted wire pairs and a modular jack
with two, four or six contacts.

Crimping Tools: We used this device for crimping an Ethernet cable after we finish possible
order of the color for straight through and crossover using RJ-45.

The major function for which it is designed is to crimp or connect a connector to the end of a
network cable.

Cutter near the handles that can be used to cut CAT6 cable.

8
fig 4:crimping tools

Trucking: Is an enclosure usually with a rectangular cross section, and with one removable

or hinged side, that is used to protect cables from damage and dust and water ingress.

We used this device in data communications transmission systems to provide many users with
access to a network by sharing multiple lines or frequencies and also

As the name implies, the system is like a tree with one trunk and many branches. A trunk is used
for a safety of Ethernet cable in some offices and node to the wall.

Fig 5:trunk

Cat-6 cable: We used this cable for data translation between devices. The three most common
types of communication cables are twisted pair, coaxial, fiber optic. Understanding the
differences between the three will shed light on how data travels through each cable, which

9
ultimately affects your connection and things like speed, latency, security, cost, etc. and also the
differences between UTP and STP is UTP is used to reduce crosstalk or noise while STP is
shielded twisted to reduce electromagnetic interference. to here is a general breakdown of the
three different types of cable systems and what they are capable of:

Twisted pair cables

Fig 6:cat=6 cable

Twisted pair cables are quite literally a pair of insulated wires that are twisted together to help
reduce noise from outside sources. While this does help some, these cables are still very
susceptible to outside noise. Twisted pair cables are the most cost-effective option of the three
but that also brings about lower bandwidth and high attenuation. There are two types of twisted
pair cables:

Fig 7:twisted pair cable

10
Puncher: We used this tool to punch the UTP cable wires down into the blades built into the
jack of the node. Cat-6 cable: We use cat_6 cable for data translation between devices.

Fig 8:puncher

Fisher (expenditure pipe): We used this device to hold screws of different size.

Cutter: We used to cut different materials of networking such as: cables, trunk and wires.

Network node: in a communications network, a network node is a connection point that can
receive, create, store or send data along distributed network routes. Each network node whether
it's an endpoint for data transmissions or a redistribution point

Patch panel: A patch panel in a local area network (LAN) is a mounted hardware assembly that
contains ports used to connect and manage incoming and outgoing LAN cables. A patch panel
uses patch cords, a sort of jumper cable, to create each interconnection. Patch panels are usually
attached to network racks, either above or below network switches. Patch panels can be based on
the number of ports they contain, with 48-port, 24-port and 12-port panels among the most
common. Patch panels are also designed for specific cable specifications like cat 5e, cat 6, cat 6a
and cat 7 cables.

2.5 Scope and Limitation

Internship experience plays a vital role for every student to implement their theoretical
knowledge and geta practical knowledge from any organization. A student can implement
this internship experience in his future work area. commercial bank of ethiopia in branch of
lalo kile (CBE) gives me opportunity for gathering practical experience and preparation of the
report.

Limitation of This intership

 The intern does not enter electronic device to the organization e.g. flush, computer
 The intern does not access anything without company advisor or ICT team workers

 Company does not have enough work place means maintenances room

11
 Company does not have computer laboratory room to intern students so the company
have prepare laboratory rooms to next intern students

 Lack of budget and Shortage of transportation.

 Did not work by its cooperative working plan.

 Lack of classroom and Lack of managing employee.

2.6 functional requirement

Funtional requirements is prerequisite activities that is performed highlight for the purpose of
remember or as a hint what we done for practical one. Those are:

Cable Arrangement, punching ,Crimping ,how to install different software

application and sharing printer and image from PC or from HDD to PC.

there are two types cable arrangement .those are straight through cable arrangement and cross
over cable arrangement.

Straight through Cable

We used this cable to connect different type of network devices where the pins order on one end
follows the 568A pinning order and the other end of the cable follows the same 568A pinning
order. this type cable arrangement used to connect different type of electronic devices such as:

. Computers with switch

. Routers with switch

. Switch with hub

Cross over cable: We use this cable to connect the same type of network devices where the pins
order on one end follows the 568A pinning order and the other end of the cable follows the 568B
pinning order.

That means connecting two pieces of equipment that have the same pin edge on both ports such
as connecting.

EXAMPLE: Console cable: Rollover cable (also known as Cisco console cable) is a

type of cable that is most commonly used to connect a computer terminal to a switch’s console

13
port. The main purpose of console cable is to reset and configure the switch by connecting pc
with switch.

Fig 10:Console cable

Steps to punch UTP cable

Make sure the stripper is adjusted properly on a scrap piece of cable.

The Stripper should be adjusted to only cut the jacket to make removing it easier and not nick the
twisted pairs.

Straighten the pairs out completely and lay them over the top of the jack with the order of the
color pattern for wiring.

Keeping the pairs as twisted as possible press the wire into the correct groove with your thumbs.

If you completely straighten the wires to run them through the jack you will risk cross talk
between the pairs.

Using a punch down tool, punch the wires down into the blades built into the jack.

The blades in the jack are designed to work with solid cable, and may not work with stranded
cable.

Make sure the blade is facing the outside of the jack.

14
Step to crimp UTP cable

By making cat6 Ethernet cable, the advantage of this Ethernet cable is to transfer the data easily.
To make the cat6 Ethernet cable the following steps are performed:-

Step 1: Strip the cable jacket about 1.5 inch down from the end.

Step 2: Spread the four pairs of twisted wire apart

Step 3: Untwist the wire pairs and neatly.

Step 4: Cut the wires as straight as possible.

Step 5: Carefully insert the wires all the way into the modular connector, making sure that each
wire passes through the appropriate guides inside the connector.

Step 6: Push the connector inside the crimping tool and squeeze the crimper all the way down.

CHAPTER 3

3,Overall Internship Benefits

The main advantage of Internships is used to provide the students with valuable insights into the
professional and industry-oriented side of their field of study. It is used to enable students to put
into practice the skills, techniques, and knowledge that are important for success in their future
work places. Some of the advantages are:-

 It is used to add value to the educational experience of students.

 It Provide a link between theory and practice.
 It Provide an experiential learning opportunity for students to apply the concepts, knowledge
and skills gained to real world situations.
 Increase the marketability of students for future employment.
 It is used to develop an awareness of community, economic and social issues in a global
society.
3.1.Theoretical knowledge and Practical skills
Theoreticalearning is what is the knowledge is about and the practical application is how the
knowledge learnt needs to be implemented in certain real life situations .
The mode of practical application along with theory gives everyone a clear explanation about
the facts.
Internships is practical activities that develop our knowledge and experiences through practices
work .this the best way acquired knowledge than theoretical part.

Those knowledge we acquired are:

How a cable are putted inside trucker to connected a node

How we design logical implementation of network infrastructure

How a cable are punched on node for connection

How cable are punched on patch panel

How we arranged straight through cable and cross-over cable

3.2.Team playing skill

“Team players” typically have strong communication, collaboration, active listening, and
problem-solving skills.

Here are several ways you can focus on improving your teamwork skills:

16
 Offer help.
 Actively listen.
 Communicate.
 Respect others.
 Be a problem-solver
 Celebrate teammates' successes

3.3.Interpersonal communication skill

This was what inspired me to ask and communicate with different persons in different areas of
specializations. It can be said, one of the practical essences of the internship is to advance the
interpersonal communication skills. There are a lot of people that were met during my internship
program and this had helped me to increase my personal behavior corresponding to social
interactions. Now I know that these interactions with different peoples may help me as
references in my future career in other working environments. It may also be useful in each next
level and the internship has accomplished its goals in this aspect.

3.4.Leadership skill

During this internship I gained different skills some of this are:-

Listening skills: These skills enable me to recognize what another person is saying.  They
comprise new ways of responding so that the other person feels his troubles and feelings have
been understood. And I respond immediate thing to the speaker man.

Speaking skill: in this skill I can speak to every person for my or his want to fill.
Conflict-resolution skills: These skills enable me to resolve or manage conflicts effectively. Especial in
my work section during project execution the difference of idea is obvious so that to overcome such idea
overlap as a team a used to different mechanism of conflict resolution. For the future I will enter into
different organization in that organization different employee is there may be occur conflict so I
can resolve the problem as I learn during two month internship.

Asking skill: I ask questions so I am sure of the objectives of the team.

Communication skill: I have improved formal communication skill, with the help of my
associates; I have found many options to develop these skills

3.5.Understanding Work ethics and related issues

CBE maintains high standards for the conduct of its employees.
▪ Employees are expected to exercise common sense, good judgement and discretion.
▪ Employees are expected to conduct themselves honestly and with integrity.

Chapter Four

4. Conclusion and Recommendations

17
ICT center of CBE of lalo kile branch established for the purpose of security guide, installation
and after installation they give support if problem happen.

Network installation one of the best , fast way of communications in any organization
throughout the world .so during stay in internships we have observed so many professional
activities and learn as well. This internship was very fruitful to us because we had to knew what
we apply during installation. We also learn new concepts and new ways of working. During this
internship period we acquired practical experience to complement the theoretical content of our
study in the class, Network cable installation, network cable punching and installation using
network materials. To conclude, we think that this internship was very beneficial to us as we
learnt a lot, and it made our discover work's in a real world.

4.1.2. RECOMMENDATION ABOUT ORGANIZATION

Practicing at CBE of lalo kile branch was a great experience for us. I had learnt many things
throughout internship period. From my little knowledge what I have some recommendations as
follows:

CBE of lalo kile branch have a very few employee in network installation whereas the work
pressure is high. So the department could increase their workforce and share the work together.
Secondly, to increase the rate of work efficiency they need faster communication using internet
computer with user. The ICT center should update or add more network features and appoint a
professional operator so that it might save time, money, labor and execute an impact for the long
run.
