Statement of Purpose

Why do I want to teach in Taiwan?

Taiwan holds dear to my heart since I was young, as it is one of my


dream destinations. This nation has long been famous for its technology-driven
economy and an economically healthy country. Taiwanese people are among
the best-educated people, and often ranks in countries for quality of education.
They are also known for its commitment to education. Further, Taiwan is one of
the safest countries in the world. It is a nation where rich culture and deep
traditional values coexist peacefully, and that has influenced the world. Knowing
these facts gives me an immense motivation to pursue my dream and to apply
as a Foreign English Language Teacher. My experience, training, talent and
passion suits the English language teacher position, and my immersion with the
Taiwanese culture will be shared through my talks to the Filipino community.
I graduated Psychology in October 2005, but my passion in teaching
ignited in the year 2007 when I first landed an English teaching job in Thailand.
Since then, I have always loved teaching. That is why I took Teacher Education
in 2009 and eventually obtained a Professional Teaching License both in the
Philippines and Thailand. I have so far completed 39 units in Master of Arts in
Education major in Instructional Leadership at Pangasinan State University-
Open University System (PSU-OUS), Philippines.
During my first four (4) years in Thailand, I taught English Conversation
in grade school pupils. I trained several pupils for English Contest such as
Storytelling, Speech Contest and other Academic Contests which they won and
received various awards. Four years later, I had an opportunity to teach in
vocational and college students enrolled in the International English Program.
Mainly, I taught English, Business, Tourism, and General Psychology courses to
Thais, Laos, Burmese, Nigerian and Chinese students. Moreover, I organized
speaking clubs and or events and had language training practices with my
students after classes. Aside from my full-time job in Thailand, I did community
services in various organizations both government and private companies which
caters English learning to community workers, doctors, nurses, hospital staff,
non-formal education learners and the school directors and teachers from
Lampang Formal Education Services Area Office 1, Lampang Thailand. 
As an EFL/ESL Teacher, dealing with various diverse learners makes me
flexible in my teaching strategies and techniques which I believe will be useful
when I become an English Language Teacher. I aim to create and implement
interactive and student-centered English lessons for my Taiwanese students. I
am excited to teach English in the easiest way possible considering the learning
styles of my Taiwanese students. 

Teaching in Taiwan will also achieve my goal, that is to deepen my


cultural understanding and integration and to be engaged in cultural sharing
with people of diverse backgrounds. This goal was intensified when I decided to
move in Bangkok after my eight (8) years living and teaching in the Northern
part of Thailand. Being alone in Bangkok, the capital of Thailand, I was able to
combat loneliness and homesickness through befriending locals and adapting to
their lifestyles.

Moreover, I have been to Thailand’s neighboring countries such as


Malaysia, Myanmar, Laos and Cambodia. Through my travel experiences, I have
been very fortunate to have learned about different countries and their unique
cultures. One great realization that I have learned through international travel
is that people all over the world are basically the same. People all over the
world simply want to be happy, successful and want to provide for their
families. Whenever I met strangers on the bus and or trains, there was one
thing that we usually talked about- our culture. As a Filipino teacher, I also
showed my Thai students some of our practices and traditions, I was lucky I
had been a former singer and dancer of our college dance troupe and choral
group so I was able to successfully perform during school occasions such as
ASEAN Day and International Day. I am confident that the English Language
Teacher position will allow me to incorporate my love of teaching with my
talents, creativity and for Taiwanese culture in a unique way.

In 2012 to 2016, I became the trainer and facilitator for a Language and
Cultural Camp that culminates in a year-long programme at Rotary
International Youth- Student Exchange Programme District 3360 Thailand,
participated by Thai and International Youth-Students. As a trainer, I designed
and implemented a series of English lessons and fun-filled activities, aimed to
develop and practice their skills in communication as well as meeting new
friends to enrich their personal development. Now, I am excited to share with
my future Taiwanese students and friends everything I have encountered in my
journey as a teacher and adventurer. I actually find some Thais and Tainese
practices and values similar. Examples of these are gesture of “bending or
bowing” to show respect and gratitude, removing shoes when entering the
house, paying attention to social codes, etiquette and manners and having high
regard and respect for elders. These values hold dear to my heart- being
respectful, responsible and hardworking.

To be an EFL teacher in Taiwan would be a precious experience both in


terms of my academic and professional career. I truly look forward to being a
part of your institution and I will do my best to serve the children of Taiwan as
an educator and as a cultural ambassador of my country.
