Feminist Criticism on Passengers
INTRODUCTION

The film Passengers is an American science fiction romantic film released in 2016 directed by
Morten Tyldum and written by Jon Spaihts. In the history of mankind, the biggest migration that the
humans did were to move to the Homestead II a colony plant were in two people who are awakened
ninety years too early from their hibernation pod on a spaceship, transporting 5,000 passengers,
travelling to a colony planet that is 125 light years distance from Earth. The film was based on the
1950’s EC Comic story ’50 girls 50’. The basic premise from the commercials is that this is a romantic
but scary movie about falling in love with a stranger but when you watch it, its too far from what the
commercial promote.

The objectification of women involves without knowing what Jim did to him, Aurora becomes the
lifesaver of Jim from depression, anxiety of being alone in the ship and he make an immoral decision
knowing that when he does this there is no turning back, so he decided to wake her up. As he courted
her because Aurora has no other option other than him it is like living with happiness or living alone,
She has no freedom and choice Jim’s obsession also take her future to be an aspiring journalist and had
many ambitions to do in the colony planet, From the very beginning, I’d knew that he would woke up
someone but it is not his decision whether to wake up someone to fulfill your own desire as a man even
though he were accidentally awakened due to power surge of the Starship Avalon. On the other hand,
Aurora knows nothing, she thinks that her hibernation pod failed she worried that there is no way to
put human into hibernation because their pod’s purpose is to maintain them in hibernating, After few
weeks Aurora knows what he did to her through a bartender robot(Arthur) and Jim admitted what he
did to Aurora, She were confused at the same time went insane, several other factors aid in excusing
Jim’s selfish decision. When a third passenger (Captain Manguso) awakens and hears the details of the
situation, he tells Aurora “a drowning man will always try to drag you down with him.” The suggestion
in this explanation is that the circumstance, not the action, is to fault. As such, Aurora ought to excuse
Jim for permanently changing her life for his advantage. Moreover, the science fiction components of
the story meet with the sentiment components in such a way as to offer Jim a way to recovery in
Aurora’s eyes he put his life in danger and employments his aptitudes as a design to spare the dispatch.
Amid this grouping, the film mirrors his sure bravery with Aurora’s feelings have to be consoled. His
courageous activities not as it were cements Aurora’s sentiments for Jim, but too the film’s
commitment to dated sexual orientation parts. After saving the ship and its passengers Jim finds an
alternate way of putting Aurora back into hyper sleep and tells her about it. In other words, he is ready
to fix the damage and to give back her life awaiting in the future he did and do without a relationship
with her. Aurora choose to be with him after all she is ready to take her life in the ship travelling with
Jim and made a good life. At the end of the film, Aurora’s voice left at a recorder in the ship, reading
the book she wrote about her life that she probably leave for the passengers of the ship that she’ll never
meet, and revealed the starship Avalon transform in a beautiful garden, it signifies that despite all the
circumstances and problems Jim and Aurora encountered they overcome it and had a extraordinary life
in space proves it
that a relationship in that situation is possible, this movie portrays an existential love story after all.

To conclude, I recommend the movie for those who wants a sci-fi love story and also adventure. Jim
made a decision that will make his life a thousand better than before but there is no taking it back, that
when he decides to woke Aurora up and murdered her life by taking away her future for his own
desires. He shouldn’t wake her for his own fulfillment, he became selfish on deciding on a stranger’s
life, this stranger(Aurora) were powerless in the damaged or problem that Jim caused her even her
cannot put herself in hibernating and become confused because the man he loved were also the man
who destroyed her life. “A drowning man will always try to drag you down with him.” Captain
Manguso said, the only thing Aurora can do is to accept her fate that Jim did, the movie element
intersects with the romance elements wherein Jim had a window of opportunity to restore himself in
Aurora’s eyes. He indeed made his heroic actions saving thousands of lives. After the accident, he
found a way to put Aurora in hyper sleep using the Autodoc, but Aurora choose to have a life with him
and they had a great life travelling. The film were great I considered it as a masterpiece it has a least
count of cast but it went well although the scenarios are unbelievable and impossible it has balanced
the elements of the movie and the romantic elements of the story, I suggest to the author and director to
make more like this movies.
