Film analysis

has it ever occurred to you that human modern technology in space could lead to death? Hello, this is
faris abushindi, today I will be analyzing the Oscar winning movie passengers.

The movie Passengers is a sci-fi / romance movie, produced by Columbia from Sony, village roadshow
pictures, start media, original film. The movie was directed by Morten Tyldum, who made the popular
movie imitation game, recruiter and passengers which is the movie I am going to analyze today, the
movie came out in 2016 with the characters of Chris Pratt playing as Jim Preston and Jennifer Lawrence
as aurora lane and Michael sheen as Arthur the bartender. The movie passengers Is put under the genre
of romanticism, sci-fi, thriller, drama, adventure movie, but today we are going to analyze sci-fi genre
which the director used to make the movie more thrilling and to send out his message to the viewers.

Although every individual wish to be in the movie because of the solitude in space, at the beginning of
the movie we can see Avalon — a commercial starship — ferries more than 5,000 colonists on a voyage
from Earth to a new home world called Homestead II. To survive the 120-year trip, the travelers are
placed into induced hibernation, but an accident rouses Chris Pratt’s character — mechanical engineer
Jim Preston — 90 years early. Jim is the protagonist where he plays a significant role in the outcome of
the movie, but we can consider everything he has done a lesson towards the viewers where he had to
learn in the hard way. As Jim and aurora face living the res to their lives on board, with every luxury they
could ever ask for, they begin to fall for each other, unable to dent their intense attraction until they
discover the ship is in grave danger, with 5000 lives sleeping passengers on the stake, Jim and Aurora
are the only ones who can save them.

Chosen scene

In this scene we can see Jim discovering a new room where he checks it and finds out it’s where you
were a suit that is made from carbon fiber and other material that weren’t clearly stated, carbon fiber is
a material that is strong and can withstand the harsh environment of space and is a light weight
material, unlike these suits, in our modern day, (all this talk put an astronauts pic) astronauts use a
pressure bladder of urethane coated nylon and a restraining layer of Dacron, an outer thermal garment
composed of neoprene coated nylon and 5 layers of aluminized mylar and a fabric surface layer
composed of Teflon, Kevlar and Nomex, showing the viewers how advanced the future would be. The AI
system that is giving Jim the instructions also make the viewers understand how far this movie to
become a reality in technology. When Jim walks out of the star ship wearing the space suit, we can see
the sudden change from bright colors into darker ones, where when he was at the ship he had hope and
no spirit was possessing him but when the atmosphere changed Into space, it darkened the mood of the
viewers, also the color black symbolizes evilness and darkness in the form of theft or crime or dangers,
and many great cultures consider the color black is the symbol of evil demons, him looking at the space
and starting to cry knowing that no one would be able to save him and seeing the space reminds him of
the solitude that he is experiencing making the viewers sympathy with him and feel pity towards him
because of his current situation. The director chose to show this scene because space has no light that
reflect upon it, and light is a symbol for hope, making the viewer realize that there is no hope for Jim
alone, also conveying that Jim have lost all those who he loved because space also symbolizes how
people in western society wear black clothes in a funeral. Jim sheds away a tear showing the viewer how
he feels lonely and solitude introducing the genre of romanticism where the element of solitude has
appeared where it made the viewers sympathize with Jim and wanting him to find someone who can be
with him all the time. The director used this type of music to show how huge space is and showing us
that all humanity is looking forward and curious about things they don’t know (scene of the music). All
the solitude that Jim experienced made him some illnesses because researchers concluded that when a
person is suffering from solitude it would increase his anxiety and depression and his suicide rate, which
hinted the viewers of what was coming up next,( the scene where Jim tries to kill himself) showing the
viewers how Jim attempted to suicide due to the amount of time he spent in solitude, this showed how
Jim represented how he was eaten alive from the evil demons which possessed his body making the
viewers understand why Jim couldn’t stop himself from suicide, then shows how the demon left him
making him realize the mistake he was about to do. In the end of the movie, it shows how Jim
developed from being a terrified and dishonest making the audience believe he is not a main character
later in the movie proving them wrong where he developed into being a brave man who risked his life to
save the 5000 sleepers (scene of him taking the heat from the reactor) this scene showed how much Jim
developed.

Although most movies are made to come out with profit unlike this one, where the director wanted the
viewer to know that if you lie and keep it a secret then it would eventually become the greatest
consequence of your life, also the director made sure that It would be connected with others things such
as having an affair and keeping it as a secret, which later would have a big consequence on either the
wife or the husband or in another scenario where a son lies to his mother that he did not get his report
card later when the mom realize it has been given out, making her angry and mad at her son giving him
a bigger regret for this lie.

Thank you for joining my analysis today about the movie passengers, I hope this helped you understand
the movie and the scene deeper, I also hope that you enjoyed this basic entertainment for the movie.
