ACTIVITY #1: MATTER

Classify each of the given below. In the second column, classify if the given material is
a pure substance or a mixture. If the material is a pure substance, classify it as an
element or compound in the third column. On the other hand, if the material is a
mixture, classify it as homogeneous or heterogeneous in the third column.

POST LAB QUESTIONS: (Minimum of 5 sentences per item)

1. How do scientists find out about objects, living things, events and phenomena?

Scientists find out about such things by formulating hypothesis. Hypothesis is an idea that
can be tested to prove if an assumption is true. They tend to observe things to gather
information. Then scientists perform a test or experiment to confirm if their guess is true.
A theory is made after that for they already have a data that can support their
explanation regarding a phenomenon.

2. How can we organize materials and events to help us make sense of what we
observe?
Organizing is significant for it increases. Our productivity. We can organize materials
and events that can help us make sense of what we observe by asking questions about its
natural phenomenon. We gather information or ideas to collect data then select the main
points. Selecting main points of an idea will help us focus and save time on important
tasks. Then, we can articulate a hypothesis or a statement of a phenomena that we want
to prove and make a theory.
3. What is matter and how does it behave?
Matter is made up of atoms and everything that occupies space and has mass. Solid,
liquid and gas are the three states of matter that we are familiar with and they all have
different characteristics and behavior. Solid cannot move or slide past each other for
they are locked into place and have a little free space. Liquid flows easily and can past or
slide each other but not easily compressible. And lastly, gas can also slide and past each
other, flow easily but unlike liquid and solid, it is compressible.

4. Where do we find matter, how does is change from one form to another, and how
does it affect our everyday lives?
Everything that is around us like food and clothes are matter. Atoms and molecules are
the particles that make up matter. Changes in temperature and pressure cause matter to
change from one state to another. Like for example when you freeze water which is
liquid, it turns into ice. As I said, matter is everything we see therefore it affects our
daily lives by, not surviving without it for even the food we consume or clothes we use
contains atoms and molecules.
5. Based on what we have discussed, make an infographic on our topic scientific skills
and scientific processes. (You can check layout, ideas and design on the internet,
then paste your FINAL work here.)
