Chapter 1
Introduction
1.1 Product design
Product design is a complex, iterative process that includes a set of tasks, ranging from initial
research to concept development to prototyping and usability testing. The term product design
can be used to refer to any of the following:
 Identifying a real problem and inventing a completely new product to address the problem
 Making meaningful changes in a product that create new customers, or result in higher
benefits enjoyed by existing customers
 Enhancing the quality of a product by making it larger or smaller, making it more convenient
to use, improving its durability, or making it more up-to-date, thereby increasing its value
and justifying a higher price from the customers’ perspective

The goal of product design is to create a good with excellent functional utility and sales appeal
using high-quality, low-cost materials and methods. The resulting product should be competitive
with or better than similar products on the market in terms of performance, quality, ease of use,
service life, aesthetics, and price.

In today's fast-paced, globally competitive environment, where customers are demanding greater
product variety and switching more quickly to products with state-of-the-art technology, product
design has become more important than ever. A good product design increases sales. Hence, a
company can gain a competitive advantage using product design.

1.2 Our proposals

1.2.1 Proposal 01: Semi-automatic Road Cleaner

Street sweepers in Bangladesh use brooms and shovels to clean off litter, animal waste and filth.
Water hoses are used to wash streets sometimes. These do not eliminate airborne dust.

1
Road dust is a major air pollutant. High traffic on unsealed roads makes control of road dust
difficult. Dust from bare terrain and construction site is also windblown.
We developed the idea of this device to make street cleaning easier, faster, and more efficient.
The roller sweeper would clear roads faster, while the water sprayer would reduce airborne dust.
And a feature would collect street trash and bottles.
Some advantages of this road cleaner include:
 It is easy to operate.
 It is a multipurpose product.
 It can be operated manually or using power.
 It reduces hard work.
 It has a relatively low cost.

This product can be employed to clean streets and backyards.

1.2.2 Proposal 02: Smart Vegetable Cutter

Experts say ingredient shape and size may make or break a recipe. Uniformly cut foods cook and
taste better.
Cutting requires a good cutter. Unfortunately, most of the vegetable cutters and peelers we use
are manual. Different peeling and cutting products and cutters are needed for a variety of cuts.
A smart vegetable cutter may automate vegetable and fruit chopping. Our cutter's detachable
cylindrical blades enable many cuts per rotation for quick cutting. Blade designs will vary by cut.
The upper section of the cutter will use circular blades to cut vegetables into larger pieces (like
French fries) or slice round fruits and vegetables into six pieces at once.
The advantages of this product are as follows:
 It is easy to operate.
 It has a compact design.
 It is easily washable.

2
1.2.3 Proposal 03: Home-made Cake Decorator

Manual cake decorating using turntables, scrapers, and piping nozzles takes time and work.
Despite efforts, the decoration may not be ideal.
Online bakers may also have to produce several cakes quickly to meet delivery deadlines.
Compromising on quality or preparation time can lead to customer displeasure.
The third invention, the home-made cake decorator, would help home bakers decorate cakes
neatly and easily. As the cake spins in the decorator, the dimensionally adjustable dual blades
will remain fixed, spreading icing uniformly on the top and sides. To decorate the cake, the
decorating tip can be repositioned.
Using this semi-automatic decorator,
 A circular cake of any size can be frosted smoothly and perfectly,
 The frosting process would consume less time, and
 A lot of hassle can be avoided.

1.2.4 Smart Cage

Birdkeeping needs time and skill. Hence, we propose the idea of a smart cage. This cage
simplifies bird care for novices.
Programming and sensors would schedule bird feedings. Food and water will be provided
pneumatically. A mechanical system would be employed to clean bird droppings and other
applications.
This smart cage will be a perfect solution for bird lovers with a busy daily schedule.
The advantages of this product are as follows:

 Automatic cleaning of bird droppings: The product will be able to clean bird droppings
without any manual effort.

 Automatic bird feeder: The product will be able to feed birds automatically depending on the
bird’s eating time and habit preset by the user.

 Wi-Fi attachments: There will be Wi-Fi connected camera and speaker to teach the birds
talking and to watch them in free time from remote.

3
1.2.5 Ironing Kettle
Iron and electric kettles are two daily used appliances. Using both is time-consuming and energy
intensive. Electricity costs a lot monthly. To save time, energy, and money, we combined two
goods to make this product.
This gadget helps us iron clothing and heat water. A steel disc will be attached beneath the water
heater via a detachable modified mechanism.
Electricity will heat the steel disc and water heater when the power is on. Detaching the steel disc
portion will allow us to utilize it as an iron. Thus, It will heat water and iron garments at the
same time.
Some of the advantages of this device are:
 As there is an electricity crisis throughout the country, this product will reduce the waste of
electricity.
 It will decrease electricity bills.
 The product has and easy installation system. Thus, it is user-friendly.
 Easy handling, nothing new to learn to operate the product.
 Reduces the cost of buying multiple products.

1.2.6 Remote Control Room Cleaner:

Generally, brooms or vacuum cleaners are used to collect loose dust at homes. Then, floors are
mopped with a disinfectant solution to make them spotlessly clean. Both of these are laborious
chores. Thus, we developed the idea of a remote control room cleaner.

Features:
 Ease of use: The product will have easy-to-command features to make it user friendly. It will
have a remote to control the product giving it 2 degrees of freedom in a plane. Also, to make
the control easy the product will have features to give multiple features with one push. This
will make the product more efficient and user friendly.
 Rechargeable Battery: The product will run on a rechargeable battery. Thus, the product
can be used for a long time just by recharging the battery from time to time. Also, this
portable battery will enable the product to move through the whole space without any
problem. Because the power will not be supplied from sockets.

4
 Automatic Cleaning: The products will be able to clean rooms of simple geometry
automatically. After giving a simple command once the product will give a simple sequence
of movements depending on the geometry to clean the room automatically. But during the
cleaning process the product must not face any additional hindrance out of the geometry.
 Multiple Cleaning: It will be able to do the work of vacuum cleaning and mopping
simultaneously, reducing time and effort in cleaning rooms. At first the vacuum cleaner will
suck all the loose dusts from the floor. Simultaneously the mop connected behind the cleaner
will keep on mopping the floor with disinfectants. This will reduce a two step cleaning
process to one step cleaning process.

Description:
This single product would have all the features to vacuum a room and then clean it with a
disinfectant solution. An additional broom would be attached to the cleaner to help loosen the
dust while vacuuming a room.

The product would be controlled using only a remote. However, the function of the remote is a
little different from a traditional remote. A four-wheeler would be used to move the product
around the room. When the machine gets the order to clean forward, it would keep cleaning
forward until it stumbles onto an object. Then, it would wait for further orders, for e.g. move left,
come backward, etc. A single key feature would allow these multiple orders, making it more
user-friendly.

Furthermore, there would be an automatic mode which would enable the product to clean rooms
of simple geometry automatically without any consecutive orders.
In order to achieve our target, we will be using programming and sensors to detect objects in the
path of the wheeler. When the product will detect an object in the path, it will automatically
move sideways and will also return backwards making it possible to clean rooms of simple
geometries automatically.
Use:
It can be used to clean rooms, balconies etc. in our homes, large shops, educational institutions,
hospitals, etc.

5
1.3 Selected proposal
After consulting with our course teachers, the fifth proposal ‘Remote Control Room Cleaner’ has
been selected as our final project.
The motivation behind the idea:
At our homes, brooms and mops are used to do the chore of cleaning floors. Traditionally, the
responsibility usually falls on the mother. Using brooms, mops or a piece of cloth/sponge
requires us to maintain a body posture that causes severe back pain and muscle pain. After their
30s, women’s bone density starts to decrease. This chore just adds more stress on the bones and
muscles due to the bad postures. We believe this is one of the main reasons due to which our
mothers suffer from back pain and knee pain. Thus, we developed the idea to make a remote
control room cleaner so that our mothers can clean the rooms while standing or sitting down in a
chair or a sofa. We believe this product will reduce the back pain of a lot of women and give
them more time to take rest and relax.

Chapter 2
Understanding Customer Needs through a Survey
2.1 Introduction
At its core, the foundation of product design is centered on design thinking. This is when a
designer integrates the needs of the customers and combine them with the possibilities of
technology and the requirements that will make the business a success.

For a successful product design to occur, a designer must have a clear understanding of the end
user. Understanding the customer and their behaviors, habits, frustrations, wants and needs
enables the team up to design a product with the best user experience from the very beginning.

In order to understand customers’ views on our product and to get their feedback, we have
explained the basic design and functionalities of the Remote Control Room Cleaner to our
potential customers, and conducted a survey through a questionnaire.

Our potential customers include anyone involved with cleaning the floors of:
 Households
 Office space
 Educational institutes
 Hospitals, etc.

Assessing whether there is a strong demand for a product before beginning the design and
development process sets everyone up for success and ensures time and energy are not wasted.

specifications that would maximize customer satisfaction.

Chapter 3

Incorporating the Voice of Customer in Product Design with

Quality Function Development (QFD)

3.1 Introduction
Quality means to satisfy customer need. But customers are not supposed to understand
engineering or designing constraints. Thus, Quality Function Development (QFD) appears to
bridge between these two basic parameters.

Quality Function Development is,” Listen to the voice of the market (customers)” which refers to
“Understanding the design problem”. To develop a quality product the design problem must be
understood properly. Quality Function Development basically transfers customer requirements
into technical description that must be designed. QFD helps to make a product that will deliver
customer the satisfaction he seeks for by developing what he wants instead of emphasizing on
the builder’s design only.
However, finding out the technical requirements is also a tough job to do. To figure out the
appropriate design a multi-skilled team collaborates to figure out the necessary designs at various
steps of development. Main advantage of QFD is that it helps to figure out the major pieces of
information and design requirements to merge between the customer needs and technical
expertise.
Some advantages of QFD:
1. Listens to what customer has to say
2. Improves teamwork
3. Production efficiency is improved
4. It is driven by customer requirements, not technological or technical expertise
5. It reduces cost
6. Reduces production time
7. Inspects whether customer requirements are met or not
The customer requirements were collected through a survey. The next step, Generating a “ House
of Quality “ for QFD is done in this chapter.

34
3.2 Methodology
To make the house of quality we needed to specify to parameters properly. One was ‘Customer
needs’ and another was ‘Design requirements’ . To collect the customer needs the following
mediums were used:
1. Data from Survey
2. Internet search
3. Educated guess
4. Expert opinion
At first the data collected from the surveys were thoroughly analyzed to find out the basic
customer needs according to our target market. Along with that to connect customer needs with
technical expertise we discussed with some experts in robotics and the related industries. We
also looked up in internet to find what extra features similar products of other companies have
that we could also add to our products. And there were some requirements those customers were
also not sure how to explain. We used our educated guess to figure those out.

3.3 Customer requirement and Engineering Requirement

Relationship:
The relationship between customer requirements and design requirements are given bellow:
