Module Aims, Learning Outcomes and Indicative Contents

This course serves as a quantitative introduction to the principles of fluid
mechanics and its applications in engineering problems. The course covers the
fundamentals of fluid mechanics, including analysing forces related to hydro and
aerostatics as well as hydro and aerodynamics, fluid flows in closed and open
Aims
channels, and losses in piping systems. Additional topics to be covered include
fluid machinery such as pumps and turbines, measurement of flow, and the design
of fluid systems. The Lab offers experiments in fundamental and applied fluid
mechanics.
By the end of this course, students will be able to:
 Describe the major fundamentals of fluid mechanics.
 Calculate fluid pressures and forces on submerged and floating bodies.
 Calculate velocity and pressure at any point in a closed conduit using
Learning
Bernoulli's equation.
Outcomes
 Determine frictional and other losses in a pipeline.
 Select a pump using standard manufacturer pump performance charts.
 Estimate flows in pipes and open channels using data from various fluid
flow devices, such as Venturi meters, orifices, and weirs.

Learning and Teaching Strategies

As a department’s custom, the lectures will be presented as power point and slide show on the
available projectors in the classrooms and labs and the student will be get lecture note as a course
program. Extra explanations, discussion and calculate problems will be on the board by the
lecturers and students. Make a small group students and term paper for improve communication
skill of students.
