Billboard Project - Welcome to Tenochtitlan

Name: _______________________________

Due Date: ____________________________

The Aztecs used illustrations and pictures instead of a written language to
communicate. These symbols were recorded in books called codices which
were folded like accordions. It would be very difficult for you to decode an
Aztec message but they communicated and recorded their lives in that
manner for many, many years.

Your assignment is to create a miniature billboard that would welcome

visitors to the city of Tenochtitlan. It must contain information that would be
found on a modern billboard in today’s world. You can use ideas from the
following list and add additional information as you like. Your sign should be
on 11”x17” paper, or 2 pieces of 8.5”x11” paper.

Include the following important information:

● POPULATION
● DATE THE CITY WAS ESTABLISHED
● MOTTO
● SYMBOLS/GRAPHICS/PICTURES
● AT LEAST ONE TEXTBOOK/PRINT
SOURCE CITATION
● AT LEAST ONE ONLINE SOURCE

Your graphics should indicate the unique

things that Tenochtitlan had to offer:
mountains, aqueducts, chinampa,
causeways, lake, temples, types of
crops grown, climate.

Create a billboard that is informative,

easy to understand and clear to any visitor
entering the city. Your billboard should:

● include all of the above information.

● show that you have put forth an adequate amount of effort and care. include colour,
fonts and good design practices.
● look professional and appealing in appearance.
● be an original design and not simply a copy of someone else’s
