Recommendation

Modals ( express advisability)

 Should
 Ought to
 Had better

Usage:
 (Verb 1)
X (Ending s/es/ed/ing)
 Use should, ought to and had better to give advice or make recommendation.
e.g. you’ll catch a cold if you go out like this. You should/ought to/had better wear a
coat.

 Use should when the recommendation is in passive voice.

e.g. the manual says that the computer should be disconnected from the mains before
the cover is removed.

 We don’t use had better to talk about past or to make general comments, instead we
prefer to use should or ought to. Its because had better too stronger than should
and ought to
e.g. the builders should/ought to have finished by the end of this week. (NOT: had
better have finished)

 Had better also implies a warning and more common in speaking

e.g. you had better take care on your sister, if not she’ll leave.
