Reflection/Discussion Guide Questions

1. What are the reproductive adaptations of the Philippine Eagle?

The Philippine eagle lays an egg (or eggs), or has the eggs fertilized internally (when the
sperm enters the female), as the eggs would otherwise dry out and the young would perish.

2. What are the implications of laying only one egg in the reproduction cycle of the Philippine
Eagle?

One egg being laid during the Philippine Eagle's reproductive cycle suggests that their
reproductive rate is really low. Additionally, since there is only one egg, they would have to
breed again if the incubation failed.

3. Would it have been better if the Philippine Eagle were viviparous?

I believe viviparous Philippine Eagles would have been preferable. There is no longer a need
to incubate if this is the case. A season-early injury or period of extreme weather will also
only have a moderate impact on the offspring inside the body rather than being an egg.

4. Why do you think the Philippine Eagle evolved into the sexual mode of reproduction over
the asexual mode?

I believe the cause of this is that it would have been difficult for a single parent to sustain its
necessities, such as nourishment since the eagle had to go hunting and left the egg alone.

5. What are the advantages and disadvantages of the Philippine Eagle having internal
fertilization?

One benefit of internal fertilisation is that it prevents dehydration and failure of fertilization
while also protecting the fertilized egg from predation. The drawback is that there aren't as
many children born at one time.

6. What effect does being an opportunistic hunter have on the reproduction of the Philippine
Eagle?

When you hunt as an opportunistic predator, your prey selection is constrained by the spatial
and temporal co-occurrence. Because of this, eagles will become dependent on certain
environmental or physiological factors in order to have food, which will negatively impact
their ability to reproduce since nutrients are vital for the young.

7. What effect do tree height and density as factors for nest selection have to do with the
reproduction of the Philippine Eagle?

The Philippine eagles' reproductive success will be increased by choosing the right nest site
because these trees are suitable for incubation and protection from other dangerous elements.

8. Why is the Philippine Eagle Reproduction Rate Low?

Philippine eagles have a poor rate of reproduction due to the lengthy period during which
their young are dependent. In most cases, Philippine Eagles only reproduce once every two to
three years.

9. How does the lifestyle and activities of the Filipinos affect the reproduction and ecological
fitness of the Philippine eagles?
The Philippine eagles feed, breed, and raise their young in the jungle. The loss of their forest
environment is regrettably a result of illicit logging and careless resource exploitation. This
results to fatality of the juvenile eagles and hunting process of the parents.

10. What is that one thing that you can concretely do as a young Filipino to contribute in the
Philippine Eagle conservation efforts?

I believe that as a student, I can speak up for the preservation of the Philippine eagle's natural
environment. Taking a protest against deforestation as an instance. Additionally, I will alert
my neighborhood state wildlife agency if I see any disruption of an eagle nest habitat area by
a person or a business.
