CONSTRUCTION PLANNING & MANAGEMENT
1. Basics of Project Management
2. Elements of a Network
3. Analysis of Network
1. PERT (Programme Evalution Review Technique)
2. CPM (Critical Path Method)

b
BASICS OF PROJECT MANAGEMENT

Project Management deals with both 'materials' as well as

'Human Resource' to increase the Productivity.

Objective:
1. It should be completed in minnimum time with minnimum
capital Investment.
2. It should use available Manpower & other Resources
Optimally.

b
Phases Of Project Management
1. Planning
2. Scheduling
3. Controlling

➢ Planning Involves:
1. Define objective of the project.
2. Listing Jobs that have to be performed.
3. Determining the gross requirements for materials,
equipments and man power and preparing estimates of costs
and duration for various jobs.
4. The satisfactory completion of Project.

➢ Scheduling
Scheduling is laying activities involved in completion of a project in a logical and Sequenical
manner.
It is allocation of Resources such as time, material, space , equipment accordingly.

Assigning starting and completion dates to each activity to proceed in a logical sequence
and in a systematic manner.

➢ Methods of Scheduling
a. Charts
1. Bar Charts

2. MileStone
3. Linked Barcharts
b. Network Analysis Methods
➢ PERT
➢ CPM
➢ UNETICS
➢ LESS
➢ TOPS
➢ SCANS
➢ Controlling
This Phase is the execution of Planning and Scheduling.

Replanning and Rescheduling of activities to compensate for the

devations which is called 'Updating'.

The Method of planning and controlling that was

originally developed was called Project Planning
and Scheduling (PPS).

PPS was later on converted into Critical Path

Method (CPM)
➢ Work-Breakdown Structure (WBS)

Project Objective
The Process of Breaking the whole project into Objective -1
easily identificable smaller units.
Objective -2
It is usually the 1st Process Adopted In Project
Management. Objective -3
➢ Elements of a NETWORK

Network
It is the flow of Daigram consisting of
• Activities
• Events
Connected logically and Sequentially.
Event
• An Event is either Start or Completion of an Activity.
• Events are Significant points in a project which act as
control points of the Project.
• An Event is an Instant of time and does not Require
time or Resources.
• It is Represented by NODE usually CIRCLE.
Activity
• It is actual performance of a task required for
completion of the project.
• Activity Consumes time and resources.
• It is usually represented by
• → (Arrow) in Activity on Arrow Network(AOA).
• (Node) in Activity on Node Network(AON).
Activity
• It is usually represented by
• → (Arrow) in Activity on Arrow Network(AOA).
• (Node) in Activity on Node Network(AON).

Example:
• Budget Prepared

Activity
Example
• Preparing Budget
• Mixing Concrete
Types of Event:

1. Tail Event or Start Event

It makes the begining of an activity.
It is the first event of project then known as “Initial
or Start Event”.
Example:
Activity B
2
Types of Event:

2. Head Event or Finish Event

The Event Marks the completion of an Activity.
Example:

Activity B
4
Types of Event:

3. Dual Event
All Event except the 1st and Last Event of a Project
are Dual Role Events.
Example:

Activity B Activity E
3
Types of Event:

3. Dual Role Event:

All Event except the 1st and Last Event of a Project
are Dual Role Events.
Example: Dual Event

1 3 4 5
Tail Event Dual Event Head Event

2
Dual Event
Types of Event:
Successor Event:
The Event that follow another Event are called
Successor Events to that Event.
Example: Successor Event to Event 1 are Event 2 &
Event 3.
1 3 4 5

2
Types of Event:
Predeccessor Event:
The Event that occur before another Event are
called Predecessor Events to that Event.
Example: Successor Event to Event 1 are Event 2 &
Event 3.
1 3 4 5

2 Types of Activities:
A C
B D 1. Parallel Activities:
1 3 5 The Activities which can be
E performed simultaneously and are
4 F independent of each other .

Activity A & B are

occuring simultaneous
and are independent of
each other
2 Types of Activities:
A C
B D 2. Successor Activities:
1 3 5 Activities that are performed after
E performance of the other activity.
4 F

F is a Successor Activity to
Activity E.
2 Types of Activities:
A C
B D 3. Predeccessor Activities:
1 3 5 Activities that are performed before
E any other activity can begin.
4 F

A is a Predeccessor Activity of
Activity C.
A C ➢ Logical Relationship
1. To Show Realtionship with other
t=0 activities.
2. Here dummy is required to show
B that Activity D can start after
D
completion of A & B Both.

Unnecessary Dummies
Should be Avoided
➢ Grammatical Relationship
1. To Prevent two arrows having
common beginning and common
end.
